GOLD TEETH A GIFT FROM GOD?

6:01am Wednesday 16th July 2008

TWO women living in the same street claim they have been given gold teeth as "gifts from God" after a home prayer meeting.

Carol Bull, 61, and her neighbour Christine Price, 64, say they were stunned to discover their shiny new molars following a discussion on hugely controversial American evangelist Todd Bentley.

Mr Bentley maintains that the Holy Spirit turns up at his meetings and miracles happen on a scale that many are calling a "revival".

Personal assistant Carol said the group had wanted to know if Todd's claims about the Holy Spirit were genuine.

"I prayed for a clear sign, never dreaming that this would happen. After the group went home I felt compelled to look in my mouth and there was this gold tooth. You could have knocked me down with a feather," she said.

"I called my husband Terry and we were both amazed.

"Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. This confirmed that God answers prayer and I feel so blessed that he has given me this gift.

"I have not spoken to many people about this. When I have, some have not known what to say but others have been encouraged by it."

Carol, who attends the United Reformed Church in Canford Heath, Poole, confided in her friend and neighbour Christine Price, a retired nurse, the next day.

"When she showed me her gold tooth it took my breath away," said Christine who lives two doors away.

"A few days later I was thinking about Carol and looked in the mirror. To my amazement I found a gold tooth as well.

"I visited my dentist who confirmed that the tooth had not been there during my last check-up. He wanted to know who had put it there and I told him it was God.

"He is now writing a letter of confirmation to my church. I've shared this with a few people who know me well. Some are sceptical but I truly believe this is a gift from God."

Who are they harming? These kind of fraudulent faith healers do a great deal of harm. They give people false hope and can also discourage proper medical intervention.

As always in these cases there are only three possibilities. The people involved are either frauds, deluded or genuine. Take your pick. But remember, there has never been a single proven case of any kind of supernatural miracle. Never. Not a single one. There is a one million dollar prize for the first proven case. But don't expect this pair to be in a hurry to claim it.

Why would God give the gift of 'gold teeth'? I am sure he has more imagination than that.

I think the husbands of these two ladies may want to check where the housekeeping money has been spent.

Its not April again is it?

poolebiker, Poole says...
8:10am Wed 16 Jul 08

I would also like to add my feeling of concern to the list. Dangerous fraud this is, and should be challenged much more rigorously. Once again religious nuts hit the headlines, when will it end?

JLC2, here says...
8:29am Wed 16 Jul 08

I would like to add my name to the list of don't be so flipping ridiculous.

You didn't wake up with gold teeth, but there is a high possiblilty that you've got some lead or mercury in your mouths. It would explain a lot.

Jerry, poole, dorset says...
8:34am Wed 16 Jul 08

So that's where I've been going wrong... I should be praying for gold teeth, rather than just pots of gold to pay my bills.

Maybe I should pray for the dog to get the gold teeth then, as he's getting on a bit, he won't miss them as much as I would when they get extracted and sold.

Nothing about this "miracle" on the National News. I suppose there will be pilgrimages to these ladies houses soon, all expecting to be cured of everything under the sun (as well as people hoping to never have to go to the dentist again)!

BranksomeBoy, Poole says...
8:39am Wed 16 Jul 08

Surely it would be quite easy for the Echo to speak to the ladies dentists and find out if the teeth were there at the last check - up and also check to see if the ladies have been abroad on holiday since that time. They don't look like your normal "loonies" but I find it difficult to believe that with all the miracles that could of been done he choose to give them "gangster" teeth!

True it’s the power of prayer and he’s in Dorset this week. Monday I asked for a gift, the following morning on the box beside my bunk was a top & bottom set of plastic gnashers in a jam jar.

Adrian X, Poole says...
9:26am Wed 16 Jul 08

Dangerous fraud? Haha, claiming to find gold teeth in your mouth is about as dangerous as a chimp cycling along the prom. (****, I couldn't find an appropriate metaphor! :-) ).

Discouraging "proper" medical intervention is more dangerous if it really does happen (I doubt this is common).

And faith healing may well work due to the placebo effect.

There are also reasons not to have too much faith in the medical profession. cf. the normal prognosis for mesothelioma (less than a year) and Paul Kraus (over 10 years with the disease).

Adrian.... you are being very selective in your argument. Citing one example for one illness is hardly convincing.

There is a massive amount of evidence, actual examples where people have been harmed, or died, having avoiding medical treatment due to supernatural beliefs.

So on the one hand we have zero evidence of any faith based supernatural miracle. On the other we have plenty of real life examples of people (or their children) dying or being harmed by their supernatural beliefs.

I know what my heart believes.

Jonny, Alum Chine says...

Adrian X, Poole says...
10:22am Wed 16 Jul 08

You may know what your heart believes but so far you have given zero examples to prove it! I don't doubt that there are cases of people being harmed by supernatural beliefs, but, as I said, I would be surprised if it is common. However, the original report where these ladies are claiming to have gold teeth isn't going to be dangerous for anyone.

My example was followed by a section in square brackets which got deleted (don't use sections in square brackets!) and was to illustrate that faith in conventional medicine is sometimes misguided. I don't see how you can say I was being selective. Should I provide 10 examples to prove this point? How many do you need?

Of course this story just happens to appear after 9th July when Todd Bentley decided to "take time off" following an investigative report on ABC news about his finances and criminal past an past that includes him being arrested for sexual abuse.

The ABC investigation was unable to get evidence to support one single claim of Bentley's healing power.

Since 9th July there appear to have been a large number of stories on Google news where Todd Bentley is mentioned.

I am just concerned that even the Echo is getting suckered into the Todd Bentley promotional machine.

BR, Bournemouth says...
11:15am Wed 16 Jul 08

Why is it that such an innocent article has provoked such a hostile response from some people?

I suspect that these ladies friends and/or families would know wether or not they had the gold teeth to start with. It would be nice to know if they could provide any documented proof of this. But as for
"Surely it would be quite easy for the Echo to speak to the ladies dentists and find out if the teeth were there at the last check - up"
I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure that there is a law against that.

Also "... God will happily let children starve to death in third world countries, and decent people agonising deaths from cancer ..." I suspect that these topics have caused you (BournPosh) some pain but have to ask why you blame God for these? We can feed the world we could probably also cure cancer if tried hard enough and made some "lifestyle" changes. But we choose not to.

As for Mr Bentley I have a few

Oh yes ... I did try to Goodle the "million dollar prize" for proven miracles but all I got was James Randi's site where he disproves "paranormal, supernatural, or occult power" so no reward for proven miracles just miracle workers.

If I woke up with a gold tooth that wasn't there the night before, my immediate reaction would be to panic and find out if I had somehow missed a few days of my life in delerium and had dental surgery. If the only conclusion that could be made was a miracle from God, as a Catholic I would do my best to ensure the Pope heard about this to see what he made of it. I would not be calmly smiling for a photograph for my local paper. I have a hard time believing this story.

Or, if an unanswered prayer is a sign that God does not answer prayers, should we weigh up unanswered prayers against unnecessary gold teeth? Hmm... that's countless billions against two. PokesdownMark, I thank you for your links, though most of them point to the same case. (and it is unfair that you include the case of Jehovas Witness who did not want a blood transfusion)

My point is really that faith that you are going to be healed is hardly dangerous if you consider how rare it is. Most religious people who pray for their own healing do not stop conventional treatment.

More dangerous is a misplaced confidence in conventional medicine. (One should always be sceptical).

As for whether faith healing works, the livescience article hit the nail on the head. You have to take a large sample of people with a certain disease, randomise them into two groups, "faith heal" all in one group (whatever that entails), then compare the results.

"When God allows . . . " rather than "When God sends . . ."?

Your answer implies that God has the power to "allow " major disasters to happen or not depending on his mood that day.

But whether he "sends" or "allows" is immaterial when half a city's population is crushed to death under falling masonry.

Has God ever given you an reason why he allows people to suffer agonising deaths in this way?

Au contraire, I have no interest in believing in a supposedly loving God that "allows" such misery in the world.

I am merely questioning the blind belief in such a deity.

These poor ladies and thousands more like them have been duped by 'lying signs and wonders' just as predicted by Jesus in the Bible (2 Thess. 2:8-10/Matthew 24;4-5/1 Timothy 4:2 etc. etc.)when he spoke of the last days. Anyone who takes care to read the scriptures and do what Jesus told us to do which is to 'test all things'like the Berean church who were praised by the apostle Paul for doing so, will see that none of what Mr. Bentley does matches up with anything in the Bible which is our only 'measuring stick' of the nature and character of God the Holy Spirit. It is a shame that they did not report the violent antics of Mr. Bentley who kicks cancer victims in the stomach, kicks old ladies in the face with his biker boot 'under instruction' by the Holy Spirit(footage courtesy of YouTube if you care to check it out) and prays prayers like 'Bam Bam' and 'Blah Blah Blah'. I am really surprised by the people quoted who I know are both long term Christians who have no discernment where this sort of thing is concerned.Perhaps they consider themselves to be beyond deception unlike 'the elect' in the Bible.
I suggest that anyone who believes any of this goes and looks in their Bible to see if they can find anything which is remotley like it. They will not of course, and if they think that God is doing 'a new thing' then they must remember that God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow but we do not see any of this type of behaviour or these type of things recorded as performed by the greatest miracle maker of all, Jesus.
A gracious warning to all church leaders who have 'bought' into this, and that is one delivered to people in leadership in the Word. Be careful lest you lead others astray - 'to whom much is given, much is required'and you will be answerable for that before God.

Religion has caused more wars in history than politics (still half religion driven in itself), money, oil, land etc and it's that fundemental belief that one's own religion is right and everyone elses is wrong that causes all this to happen!

I've been to one of these evangelical meetings just to see what happens. People get hypnotised by what's going on. It's quite amazing what suggestion can do. I wouldn't be at all surprised if these ladies had been hypnotised into fogetting that they already had a gold tooth.

Jesus Himself had the very same problem with doubters. If you could see Jesus walking the earth healing people would you say the same as you have done with regard to Todd Bentley? Well guess what that is exactly what you are doing, you prosecuting Jesus, God has raised up Todd Bentley for such a time as this, Jesus is inside Him, Jesus is the source of the healing and not Todd Bentley, the power source is Jesus, who when you are born again comes to live inside of you. Unless you are born again you cannot enter into heaven.
As regard to God bringing earthquakes and the such like, wrong, God gives life, its the devil that comes to rob, steal and destroy. Yet I hear no one blame the devil, it was the devil who tempted Eve in the garden of Eden, and now He is robbing you! Why cannot people be happy for others, I have not read one who have been pleased for these ladies, that says alot, perhaps its jealousy, or pride?
Luke 5:22-26
But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to fogive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying. We have seen strange things to day.
Luke 5:31-32
And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Charlie thats a very good point about hypnotism. Repetitive chanting and altered mental states figure prominently at these type of events.

Claiming to know the mind of god should be a crime. In fact I think it will be one day. Probably a half dozen generations further along. If we make it that far.

My final word.... organised religion is to religion what organised crime is to crime.

One of my favourite quotes from that much misinterpreted guide book called the Bible is:

"And a great Profit shall come upon the land"

In the King James version It may be spelt Prophet, but I think that was an error.

I am quite certain that this evangelist is living quite comfortably at his victim's expense.

Reply Well said Charlie .

Religion (as is) has been almost totally discredited and exposed as described so rightfully within this thread.

False Prophets are everywhere even Tony Blair has jumped from Politics onto the Religious Bandwagon has he not?

If these Gold Teeth have been inserted as is alleged . Then this is more the work of the Devil as a Trickster and Con than that of and God.

Personally everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect that. Yet as a True believer in The Creator I could not agree that any God would place Gold Teeth into anyone's mouth as so described.

I have come upon many things that are regarded as Supernatural in a few cases some have proved to be just that.

Quote Anyone remember the strange events of Abbot Road Winton things that went bump in the night?

Reply Yes indeed I do free wessex.

The case as I remember it was that of an alleged poltergeist and a young boy who was allegedly talking to an unseen friend in the garden of these premises, If this is the case you refer to?

I visited the premises shortly after the exposure in the media as to alleged objects being hurled around by some unseen force.

I discovered that a next door neighbour had committed suicide and was a close friend of those who were affected by this disruption.

That gave me a clue as to the source of the disruption, on investigating the area I found that the old fashioned Gas meter resting on a shelf with rusted and broken brackets the Mains Gas Pipe had had fracture lines and was about to burst.

We called the Gas Board and the piping etc. was replaced and made safe,

I told the residents of the house that I believe all should now be OK, as in my opinion the spirit of the man who hung himself at home was not at rest, and was warning them as best he could as to the possible explosion.

Later I called back to check if all was well, and upon leaving I was interviewed by a reporter and Television crew

I told them what you read her and went on my way.

I believe the camera was perhaps still filming me leaving in my yellow Capri with black Vinyl roof.

You are free to check as you may or may not desire.

how can you put Jesus and Todd Bentley in the same category-this man is vile. Jesus said to the man to rise up and walk - he didnt headbut him or leg drop him. that's because he was doing it by the power of the Holy Spirit, not the one that Todd is filled with. You should read about Kundalini Yoga but most of all, read the Word and Jesus warns you all about people like this man in the last days. Do you think that a Holy God would use a man who cannot heal without his angel 'Emma', who hurts people (Jesus never did)and whose life and behaviour display none of the elements of the fruit of the Spirit? What a sham.
These 2 women have dreamed up this 'miracle' of gold teeth, each, in a vain attempt to show as proof the entity in which they have 'faith'.
Surely if this is true, as they propose, then faith is no longer necessary, and we should take this as a priori evidence that that there is indeed a supernatural entity that created us, the universe and everything in it, and who hears our every thoughts, waiting for us to achieve this 'faith' (no longer necessary), so that we can acknowledge our failings in light of his ultimate goodness.
The fact is that it would be a logical fallacy to conclude anything of the sort from the appearance of these teeth other than the seemingly endless lengths to which the 'faithful' will try to collude and conspire and persuade anyone who doesn't share their point of view.
It's not that the rest of us don't understand what you believe, we really do - it's not rocket science, it's that we just DON'T BELIEVE IT.
If you want to play this game, by all means go ahead and give it all you've got, I nor anyone else has any right to stop you. Repackage the basic human instincts of kindness and regard for fellow man in the form of 'divine revelation of morality' and give to the poor, comfort the sick, etc, but be mindful of the fact that those of us who do not believe in your god carry out these acts all the time, and never in the hope that it serves anything than it's own purpose.
Don't ask us for tax breaks because you have bandied and organised and called yourselves a church or a religion, and we won't ask for any money from you.
Don't take your beliefs to an extreme such that you would kill or injure other people based on their peaceful accordance with a belief system other than yours, and we won't persecute you based on your beliefs either. So no crusades, no suicide bombings, no knocking on my door at 10 oclock on a Sunday morning. After the increasingly heated 'discussion' we had the last time, I doubt you'll be bothering again, but please leave the neighbors alone too.

No Man or Woman is without sin, likewise there is no man or woman who is not beyond redemption if they choose to truly believe in the Creator of all things.

Since early times (so called) Holy Wars have been used as a weapon against others for the collection by force of material things, the latest being the War on Iraq for the collection of Oil, etc.

The New element (of Evil) is the so called Terrorist when in point of Fact Bush and Blair were the ultimate Terrorist of modern day times.

I feel strongly about this being a delusion, having watched this 'ministry' much on TV,researched the Bible and previously attended similar church meetings myself. God is concerned about how we live our lives. Our love for Him is shown by the fruit we bear. God says He is the same, yesterday, today and forever. Th He has given us everything we need for Godly living, Jesus death and resurrection was ENOUGH !! We need to walk in the victory of the Gospel and not seek out expereince after experience that's what these kind of ministries typically promote.

This is how I see religion...

...religions are like perspex spheres. They have subtle colours which change how people inside the spheres see the world. Different colours for different religions. People with no religious (supernatural) belief see the people in their spheres arguing about the colour of grass and the colour of the sky and its so clearly wrong. But they have no point of reference outside to compare. But they can see the other religions in their own spheres and apply critical thinking to disregard their religion. They say: ha look at those idoits in the pale blue sphere! But they fail to understand they are inside a sphere of their own.

If there was a correct religion then there would be a clearly favoured group in the world. There would be a group with happiness, good education, prosperity and an absence of natural disasters. Yet if you look at the world you do not see that at all. In fact you could argue, with convincing statistical evidence, that the areas of the world that are happy, prosperous, well educated and safe are the ones with very low levels of religious belief. Such as the nordic countries (and the UK). At the same time, those that do have high levels of crime, poor education and strife are often the areas with high levels of religious belief.

As a lifelong student of the paranormal, I believe these two women who stick their nexk out with such an outrageous story, deserve at least to be listened to.
On the other hand they deserve also to be properly investigated - and thus exposed if they are frauds.
They also deserve a newspaper with reporters that will do a proper investigative job on their claims.
Where are the photos of their teeth?
Where is the interview with their dentists? Should we somehow be content with one woman saying the dentist confirms a miracle?
Were the teeth all gold or gold filled?
Do the dentists confirm the teeth just happened to have gaping cavities ready to be filled with the gold?
Who is doing forensics on the teeth?
With all due respect to the women concerned - how can we be sure they didn't just go out and get their teeth filled at other dentists?
There are a million questions but the Christian reporter doesn't seem capable of asking them and the Echo's follow up story consisted completely of anonymous quotes from this website!
This particular holy roller evangelist is well known for this gold teeth gimmick - along with his 'slaying in the spirit' - people falling down in some kind of trance.
There is another guy on the web running something called Matrix Energetics - not Christian at all - who has similar phenomena - people falling over when he touches them and claimed miracles.
He doesn't label it 'God' - he claims to be using quantum physics which seems to theorise any number of parallel worlds where just about everything is possible.
If this gold teeth thing is for real it will be because the power of intention when coupled with strong belief, seems very occasionally to affect and even produce matter.
In a future world all this will be embraced by science but for now let the minions continue to wallow in superstition and believe paranormal phenomena is either God or the Devil doling out favours or curses.

Excellent points.

Why did the Daily Echo allow this preposterous story valuable front page space without even the most basic checks?

Isn't the first job of a good journalist to check the facts?

Even if the paper failed miserably with the first story, it could at least have attempted a proper follow-up.

It just makes you wonder how many other Echo stories are similarly poorly researched . . .

Actually I do not think this happens in that sequence. Generally people realise that mythical characters like the tooth fairy, santa claus, elves at the bottom of the garden are not real. Then most people realise that aliens and ghosts are not real. Around this time almost everyone decides that the gods of others cannot be real. Then many people just make that extra step to realise the god of the culture they happened to be born into is not real.

There is increasing experimental evidence that our brains have evolved to make us susceptible to religion. It is probably a requirement to have children that will trust warnings from their parents even though they have not seen every danger listed. A kind of built in acceptance of faith in a higher authority. That is why religious people talk about feeling god. Its because they really do feel something. Specific parts of their brains light up during MRI scan tests when they pray or think about god. It is a real physiological effect. But that does not make it actually real. The same areas light up in rational brains but just in response to other similarly emotive sources, such as thoughts of ones loved ones.

Its very interesting that all children reach a conclusion that father christmas is made up even though many parents make great attempts to continue the deception as long as possible. Even to the extent of planting evidence! This may be because there is not an organised group that continually re-enforces the myth. No church of santa primary schools!

Sorry I should have been clearer... I was talking about safe and prosperous on a global scale. Also thinking of safe in terms of security, as well as personal safety when out and about. (Some people think that the high levels of religiosity in america are due to the lack of a health care system and western european employment protection laws. So pretty much anyone can find themselves financially ruined and homeless by a chance combination of job loss followed by serious accident or illness.)

Examples of less safe places than Bournemouth would include cities where drug dealers fire Uzi's into the night sky to mark their territory and even paramilitary police fear to tread. Where arbitrary stop and search involves daylight robbery by corrupt officials. Where buying food involves random chance of being maimed or killed by car bomb. Where wearing the wrong colour shirt, or preying in the wrong way, can attract a bullet. That kind of thing.

Perhaps the reason God gave those ladies gold teeth is to get your attention, at least its getting you to talk about God, when perhaps you would not of done if it had not been for the gold teeth. These two ladies are not the only one God has given gold teeth to, just recently He gave a silver one.

Now God has got your attention, keep your eyes peeled as something unparalleled is going to happen soon, do not know what, but something.
As it is written in
Isaiah 43:19
Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

God who parted the Red Sea to allow Moses to take Israel through, can He not give people gold teeth? God who created all things, can He not create gold teeth, of course He can, just keep checking your teeth you never know when you might get gold teeth.
As already mentioned God has done it to get your attention, and He has certainly done that, has'nt He? Hardly anyone has praised the Lord for what He has done, no one has been pleased for these ladies, all you have done is whinge and moan, why is it pride or is it jealousy?
GOD created all things, God created the Sun but you know its there because you can see it, if He had'nt given you the Sun you would not have day, and if He had'nt given you the moon, you would not have light at night. So you can see God's creation, you are in awe of God for the billions upon billions of stars, you look at His creation, yet you wonder that the same God would give gold teeth to people. God heals, He brings signs and wonders. You have limited God to long, you have ignored God too long, but no longer. Amen!

My God, the creator of all things, creating some gold teeth for some women. God does work in mysterious ways, but I can't see how this works at all.
If God wanted to 'Get your attention' as stated in previous comments I'm sure he would not feel the need to use gold teeth and the Bournemouth Echo. He already has some great published work - namely, the Bible!!

There are a couple of holes in your argument:

1: you only acknowledge god for the good bits and won't accept that he or she could possibly, in any way, ever have caused any natural disaster (say that flood when that bloke built the big boat with the animals on it)and instead put these down to other forces of nature (but wait, if god created the world and all on it, he created the means for natural disaster... but you've already acknowledged that god is never wrong).

2: Charles Darwin (well, let's face it, if he was a heretic he would have been struck down right away).

Personally I can see how easy it is for this guy to exploit the weak minded.
