SWINGING Swanage jived to the beat as the town hosted another hugely successful jazz festival over the weekend.

Now into its 19th year, the three-day event attracted musicians and enthusiasts from around the world.

Thousands packed into venues across the town to soak up the sounds of classic and contemporary performers, with something to suit the tastes of most connoisseurs.

Among the 50 artists performing over the weekend was 90-year-old jazz legend Andy Hamilton, who was awarded the MBE in the New Year's honours.

He and his band the Blue Notes, along with vocalist Vic Evans, rocked the marquee on Sandpit Field on Sunday afternoon.

Vice-president of the festival, and artist in residence, Alan Barnes wowed a healthy crowd with his saxophone playing, ably backed up by the Woodville All-Stars.

Another big draw were Dennis Armstrong's eight-strong Oliver Band, with their recreation of the Creole Jazz Band.

Charity collections took place over the course of the weekend.

Money from Saturday's collections will go to Casa Alianza, a charity that works with poor children in Central American countries.

Funds raised during Sunday's gospel service will support the Purbeck branch of Chernobyl Link, an organisation that arranges holidays in Britain for youngsters from Belarus affected by the devastating explosion in 1986.
