Success ceremony

ROYAL Manor Art College headteacher Paul Green welcomed a large assembly of parents, governors and special guests to the school's presentation of awards ceremony.

Among the guests were Ian Beckett who presented the Portland Rotary Award, John Braithwaite who presented the Lions' Trophy and Lauren King who presented the Kyle Moore Cup in memory of her 14-year-old brother who lost his life in a boating tragedy.

Mr Green gave an account of the events and achievements at the college during the past year and spoke particularly of the recent Ofsted report.

He said: "The fact that the inspector described the Royal Manor Arts College as a rapidly improving school and that we were given the second highest grading possible is a tribute to the hard work put in by all the staff and students."

He added: "We have achieved the best GCSE results in the school's history and our next task is - to quote from a speaker at a recent meeting - "schools need to teach children what to do when they are faced with a situation where they don't know what to do."

Talking of very exciting times ahead, Mr Green mentioned the developments working with Chesil Education Partnership, apprenticeships and the Pyramid development towards one to 19 years education on Portland.

He said: "Our biggest news is that the Royal Manor Arts College has won the prestigious Futures Vision Award which is awarded to only two schools in the south and two in the north for outstanding community and educational developments and plans for the future."

He explained: "This means that we will host a special visit of 80 high-ranking dignitaries, politicians, business leaders and head- teachers at the end of September and this is a tremendous accolade for Portland which will truly put us on the map."

He added: "The business leaders in particular have access to millions of pounds of sponsorship money which we will do our very best to access for the young people of Portland."

Student entertainment was provided by the Rubbish Band and Singing Group, dancers and vocalist Shakira Brading.

Award for Amber

AGAINST all the odds, Amber Neave, 14, is holding her own in education and the Royal Manor Arts College applauded her courage by presenting her with the Lewis Naerger Award.

This was presented to Amber during the Year 9 and 10 awards ceremony.

Her bravery was cheered by the large assembly of parents, governors, guests, staff and pupils.

Amber, who is grateful for the assistance given to her at school by her carer, was born with fluid on her brain and suffers from epilepsy.

Four years ago, she was in a coma for two months, due to a blockage occurring in the drain that has been placed in her brain.

She said: "I have been lucky recently as the drain hasn't blocked and I managed to get through my exams.

"I am working hard to fulfil my dream of studying childcare so that I can become a nanny, so every year of staying well enough to study is a bonus to me."

Amber's parents were proud that she should have received the Lewis Naerger Award which is presented annually to the student who, under unique circumstances, has partaken fully in the life of the college and has met challenges.
