ROCK cakes and jam rolls could prove the biggest hits at Camp Bestival, now the Dorset's Women's Institute has taken on a baking challenge.
Members of the county branch, based in Icen Way, Dorchester, are anticipating cake sales of 4,000 slices at the three-day family music festival at Lulworth Castle.
Up to 10,000 festival-goers could attend the sister show of the Isle of Wight's pop festival and 400 cakes will be ready for them in the WI tea tent.
Spokesman for the Dorset Federation of the Women's Institute, Ann Livingstone said: "For several years the WI has had a marquee at Bestival on the Isle of Wight selling drinks and pieces of cake.
"When organisers announced it was coming to Lulworth Castle we were approached to do the same thing.
"It's the first time the Dorset branch has worked at a pop festival and it's a bit of an experiment to be honest.
"We won't all be wearing flowers in our hair."
Mrs Livingstone said up to 20 members will work in relays to offer drinks and cakes to festival-goers from 9am until 6pm each day.
She said: "I don't think any of us had previously been planning to go, but we're all looking forward to hearing the music and enjoying the atmosphere.
"We've got plenty of volunteers for servicing but we're desperate for cakes.
"At the Isle of Wight festival people ate 4,000 slices of cake. You get eight slices from one cake so we need lots of cakes.
"The WI is very good at producing cakes. We hope members will all rally round to bake chocolate cakes, fruitcakes and lemon drizzle cakes. Rock cakes are always very popular with men."
The women's biggest worry is rain and traffic jams on the Wareham to Lulworth road.
WI member Stella Graham, 73, of Charminster, is one of the festival volunteers.
She said: "I'm very much looking forward to it although I don't know what to expect.
"We're looking to make 400 cakes which takes a lot of freezer space.
"I just hope the weather's nice, I don't fancy serving up cakes in welly boots but I assure you I will if I have to."
WI members able to offer their cake-making services are asked to call 01305 266366.
