County flag idea snub

IDEAS for a new flag for Dorset have been snubbed by councils in the east of the county.

Bournemouth Borough Council has cited their historic links with Hampshire while Poole and Christchurch have also decided not to be involved at this stage.

Dorchester's Dave White, who launched the project with his own design, still hopes the flag will go ahead.

He said: "I'm very disappointed with Bournemouth Borough Council's response considering the town has now been part of Dorset for many years.

"Hankering after a past life with Hampshire certainly is not a particularly good excuse. If the people of Bournemouth choose to adopt the flag, then who are the council to stop them?"

Mr White contacted all three councils after Dorset County Council chairman John Peake stressed that discussions would have to involve Bournemouth and Poole.

Chief executive of Bournemouth Borough Council Pam Donnellan confirmed their decision. She said: "We already have strong historic links with both Hampshire to the east and Dorset to the west and we wish Dorset every success in this new initiative."

The Echo invited readers to send in their designs and they were forwarded on to the county council after Coun Peake said they were happy to move the project forward.

A Borough of Poole spokesman also referred to historical issues. He said: "The borough has a rich history dating back hundreds of years and was subject to a Royal Charter in 1568 which saw it named the county of the town of Poole and, therefore, separate from the county of Dorset.

"The council has no objections to the campaign for a Dorset flag however we feel that this issue is best pursued by our colleagues at Dorset County Council."

Sally Northeast, public relations manager at Dorset County Council, confirmed chief executive David Jenkins had spoken to both Bournemouth and Poole's councils and that they were not interested at the moment.

She said: "The issue for them is to do with the fact that they have quite a strong town identity from a tourism point of view. If the flag goes into production who knows what will happen."

John Gale, 71, will be flying Mr White's design at this year's West Dorset Vintage Stationary Engine and Tractors Club rally and thinks everyone in Dorset should support it.

He said: "Everybody should get together as it doesn't matter where you are in the county."

As county flags usually have some heraldic/historical connection, and given that Bournemouth/Christch
urch did not become part of Dorset until 1974, and as the article correctly states, Poole was a town and county in its own right, why worry if they don't want to be part of it?

There's no reason why it can't go ahead without them and if they want to adopt it later that's up to them.

I don't see why we need a flag, it will just be a waste of tax payers money.

The campaign for the Dorset Cross was indepdendent to the CC - this would have cost nothing to the tax payer. As for why we need a flag - time to get with the programme I think....

Why do we need permission from some faceless bureaucrat to fly a flag? If the people of Dorset take to
flying the flag voluntarily and quite spontaneously the bureaucrats will have no option but to follow the wishes of the people.

I would urge you all to fly the flag and show the Cornish and those from Devon that we too are proud of our roots!

The English can't get together under a single flag so why worry about sodding around with a local one?

So, the English can't get together under one flag - so sod all others? What an odd thought.

How'd that work out in Devon? No, I suggest we do have a flag for Dorset for this very reason.

As I've said to people before - just because you may want to be bah humbug about the whole thing - doesn't mean the rest of us can't pursue this and rejoice in it.

I don't mind if people want a flag, i've read most of the Echo articles covering the campaign but I don't understand when a flag would be used and by who?

Next you will be wanting to devolve and have your own parliament!

All the important things needed and going on this is about as relevant and important as a Mcdonalds cheeseburger.

Flag? try spending time on something that everyone actually NEEDS!

Preposterous! I never said such a thing. I personally want an English Parliament. Having a Dorset flag compliments the English flag.

What are you doing per se? A few thousand people actually do want a flag judging by the comments on various sites - so who are you to tell us we can'? Stop taking things so seriously - it's a flag. You don't like it - don't buy it or fly it!

simon, Dorset says...
6:35pm Thu 12 Jun 08

I did not say "you said it" I infered it may be to come so get off your high horse and stop getting ranty like all minority interests that don't get what they want these days.

A few thousand (un-proven as of yet)out of how many? 5.7 million in the South west anyway, most of whom are busy working and worrying about important things and don't give a hoot about it.

This just represents a pointless excercise in creating/changing things that are not important or really needed. Hence the refusal I guess.

Jeeez - I'm just talking about Dorset for gods sake. It's a tourist thing - something for our teams, churches, pubs, parades, organisations. A county symbol that exists in all the other West Country counties bar Dorset.

702,000 people in Dorset mate - now we don't have to count Bournemouth and Poole many less.

Are you telling me you wouldn't be proud of someone from Dorset winning something in the Olympics 2012 flying a Dorset flag (as well as an English)?!?!??

It's fine - if you don't give a hoot - why bother to comment and don't try to marginalise something positive for the county.

Let's have a Weymouth flag !
Let's have a Portland flag !
Lets have a 42 Arbuthnot Avenue flag..(apologies to the current resident of this most auspicious abode)
The skull & crossbones would be more appropriate for any local government building.

702,000 still makes a few a minority but in fairness if it is only for that then go ahead and make one up and see who "runs it up their flagpole" as it was...if it catched on so be it don;t ask the suits first jsust put the idea directly to those you think will want this.

P.S If anyone from Dorset won somethign in the Olympics I would fry my own crap and eat it. The people from Dorset will be LOSERS after these Olympics wait and see.

No getting all "media attention" about bugger all is typical English these days james.

If it is only for what White43 said and no political or religious ties as such then I don't see the harm in it.

Hey - that was uncalled for.

We use gold in recognition of Wessex, red and white(apart from being colours from the arms of DCC) as a reminder of England. Which is far from being liberal and socialist thank you very much.

I thought you might appreciate that as an English patriot.

I'm pulling ya chain White43 :-)

Seriously though the pictures make it look all very YELLOW , it could do with being a touch more "Gold" looking if it is meant to be gold.Apart form that it's okay.

After more thought though, if all the other counties etc have it I guess we should have one, I mean if it is meant only for competitive games, events and so forth then it could be the start of more things, who knows.

The first flags we got were a bit more yellow than we wanted and the newer ones are more golden. Also - bear in mind that PC monitors tend to display the JPEG images in different shades - my TFT at work shows it as bright yellow - my TFT at home shows a more mustardy gold. Same JPEG from the web though.

It has no political affiliation and only a suggested religious(but not mandatory one).

It belongs to Dorset and hence the 'Dorset Cross'. So, we see it as a people's flag - made by us, for us. If DCC hadn't gotten involved - it would have stayed that way - but looking at it another way - I'm sure you all want a democratic choice of which flag represents you - so DCC are offering you that and hopefully you'll get it.

Peace out.

Did I see the words "democratic choice" ???
The only way to test this theory would be by each of you printing 702,001 of your own flags, give one to each resident, and see which one is up the pole next week.
To be politically correct, people from Poland could abstain, although it could be fun, if you like that sort of thing?

The council have asked for submissions - I see 20-odd have gone into the Dorset Echo. The chief Vexillologist of the Flag Institute and a panel of people will select 4 of the best and put these to a public vote in a county wide publication.

About the best you'll get mate. But you're not really that interested are you? Portland already has a flag so who cares?!?!

simon, Dorset says...
10:02pm Thu 12 Jun 08

Actually DingyDongy the democratic process would surely be for the elected representitives of each constituency area to debate on it and come to an informed decision that is based on what is best for the people who they represent....
