Fire crews tackle major blaze at farm

8:50am Tuesday 10th June 2008

FIRE has torn through a building near Dorchester destroying a Land Rover.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the blaze at Ilsington Farm near Tincleton using nine fire engines.

A Dorset Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said an oxygen cylinder and asbestos roofing had posed hazards for firefighters.

She said: "The building and contents were 80 per cent damaged by fire and one vehicle was completely destroyed.

"Fortunately, there are no reports of any injuries."

She said the cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.

A worker raised the alarm at around 8.30am yesterday. A total of nine appliances from Dorchester, Weymouth, Maiden Newton and Wareham attended and six firefighters needed to use breathing apparatus.

The blaze was brought under control within an hour and two crews stayed on at the scene damping down.

Experts from the Environment Agency carried out checks to ensure asbestos or other substances did not contaminate run-off water.

Police closed the road and also issued a warning that people living within half a mile of the blaze should stay indoors with closed doors and windows because of the drifting smoke.
