HUNDREDS of bingo players in Bournemouth will be left without a local club in less than a fortnight.

Just a week after Gala Coral admitted it was reviewing the future of its Winton bingo club, staff have been told it will close on February 10.

The club in Wimborne Road has a very local customer base and many residents will be unable to travel to alternative Gala clubs at the Lansdowne or Tower Park.

A spokesperson for Gala Coral was unable to confirm how many staff were employed at the club but said negotiations with workers were currently underway.

"We are probably going to transfer our staff to other positions in the group but that is all under consultation at the moment," she said. "I do not know what is happening to the building but the club will be closed."

Rumours that the closure was imminent prompted council officers to try and get the historic Art Deco building listed.

There is nothing to stop Gala Coral selling the site to a developer but the council hopes they can be convinced to consider alternative uses for the building.

Moordown ward councillor Beverley Dunlop said: "We will be sending the relevant materials to English Heritage to seek their opinion and over the coming weeks will be in discussion with Gala Coral on future uses of the building."

The building used to be the home of the 1,500-capacity Moderne cinema, which featured striking and innovative interior design when it opened to the public in 1936.

Lets all write to the English Heritage and the Gala Coral. Lets keep the building, and use as an Arts and Entertainment Centre like the Regent in Christchurch and the Tivoli in Wimborne.

Beverley Dunlop and other Councillors of the ward and proximity, use your powers and keep this building.

If it has to be removed, can it replace the IMAX. (LOL)

Whatever happens to the building is obviously of concern and needs to be looked at
Once you have lsted it you are stuck with it forever
I can remember going to see a film there on a Friday night 2 weeks before it shut .there were 3 people in the audience.
if it was making a profit why would Gala shut it?
If it becomes an Art center or similer where does the money to buy it come from and more especially the money to run it.Whilst I know that Bournemouth Little Theatre Club would love to have better premises it is obvious a 1500 seat venue would not be viable
Once again times have moved on and tastes change

Perhaps the new eatherspoons could start up a Bingo night for the local residents. Bingo may not be everyones cup of tea but it seems bizarre that whilst good old fashioned entertainment is shutting down more pubs are opening in the same road!

Well said Dibbles. You have not been to a cinema for some time then Adrian Fudge (of course you were busy doing your bit for Bournemouth), sorry had to get that bit in. Seriously though, the rise in cinema attendances has risen, where as Bingo has dropped, moreso since the smoking ban in public places. Long before such places as the Modern closed down, it was already a non smoking environment. So no problems there.

The Modern could not only be used for groups such as the BLTC, but also the Colleges, University, and the Schools. Remember the times that schools used the Winter Gardens for concerts, big performances etc, before you guys closed it down.

Nows the time to give some thing back. Save the Modern and use it as such for what it was built for, entertainment.

Incidentally, saving of the green belt. A big joke, what do you think is going to happen when they run out of places to build within the conurbations. Towns including our own expand all the time. We can only go outwards, to the north east and west, not south or upwards.

Save the Modern for Entertainment.
