A BODYBUILDER from Dorchester has been flexing his muscles to take a national title.

Sean Ferguson, of Castle Park, won the heavyweight division of the British National Bodybuilding Federation Championships making him Mr Great Britain 2007 in this class, and scooping second place overall.

He claimed his third British title and earned a place in the world bodybuilding championships in Athens.

Mr Ferguson, 38, said: "It was a very tough competition, one of the hardest ones I've done because I had a four-year lay off.

"It's the natural bodybuilding championships so it's all drugs tested. I had to do a blood test and a polygraph test."

Other titles won by Mr Ferguson include the Association of Natural Bodybuilding in Cambridge in 2001, and the 2003 BNBF championships.

The latest event took place in Edinburgh. He was up against 77 competitors and judged on his body's proportion, definition and muscularity.

Mr Ferguson said he was lucky to have made it to the championships because shortly before the Welsh qualifying championships he was hospitalised with a bacterial infection.

He said: "Bearing in mind that I had been training since December, the immune system can be a bit low when you're doing that much training, and I got celulitis on my elbow in May.

"It was very serious and I was in hospital for seven days on intravenous antibiotics and I lost a lot of muscle.

"When I was home, for six weeks I was on oral antibiotics and I couldn't train then either. When I went back to training I had eight days to prepare for it - and I came second."

Mr Ferguson said he is pleased that his three British titles show development through the lightweight, middleweight and up to the heavyweight division.

He said: "It's one of the better ones to win, it commands the most attention, like in boxing, so it's a good one to have."

The three-foot bronze statuette that marks the achievement now has pride of the place at Physiques and Shapes Healthclub, which he owns at Top O'Town.

His strict diet regime of 10 small meals a day will now continue as he prepares for the Mr Olympia National Contest in Athens in November and before that the Classic Class of the UKBFF Championships in Nottingham - which is the UK arm of the International Federation of Bodybuilders, on October 14.
