A ROYAL Navy warship affiliated to Portland is standing by to help people caught up in Hurricane Dean, which has been tearing through holiday islands.
HMS Portland, a Type 23 frigate, is part of a task force which provides disaster relief to the UK's dependent territories in the Caribbean during the hurricane season.
The ship is following 150 miles behind the hurricane and is ready to deploy its specialist teams if asked to do so.
Commander Mike Utley said: "Our ships' companies are well placed to deal with such disasters and are ready to offer whatever assistance they can in the form of first aid, provision of food and water and, later on, help with the regeneration of the infrastructure."
