POLICE, doormen and bar staff are being offered free language lessons in a bid to break down barriers with Weymouth's growing ethnic population.

Officers and pub workers learning useful phrases in Polish, French, Spanish and German will help to raise awareness of different cultures and demonstrate that Weymouth town centre is a welcoming environment.

An increase in migrant workers, especially from Poland, has prompted the move but the lessons are also seen as important in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games when people from around the world are expected to visit Weymouth and Portland.

Town centre beat officer PC Mike McCabe has teamed up with Weymouth College to organise the language lessons before the main holiday season. And after the summer, PC McCabe hopes to run more advanced classes where foreign workers will join in for more interactive lessons.

PC McCabe, who also runs a scheme to encourage responsible drinking in Weymouth and Portland, said the lessons were to encourage a better understanding of different people and cultures.

He said: "There are 30 free places available for the six hour taster sessions and although some will be taken up by police officers who work in the town centre I'm opening it up to bar and door staff and anyone else who is involved in Weymouth's night-time economy.

"The idea is to teach key phrases in a chosen language to people working in town so they are more prepared when dealing with people from other countries.

"As well as the growing Polish population, which is the biggest ethnic group, we have an influx of foreign tourists during the summer months.

"Often their understanding of English is limited and our understanding of their language is even worse so this is about helping to break down barriers and working together to provide a service to the community.

"We're trying to get people more aware now so they can develop their skills in the lead-up to the Olympics."

PC McCabe said the classes after the summer will focus on topics like conflict management and customs and traditions.

I don't think the issue is misunderstanding European cultures; afterall they have a healthy attitude to socialising and drink. Perhaps more importantly you should warn tourists about the agressive, drink-fuelled culture that has developed in the UK. I've worked in a lot of bars both in and out of Weymouth and the things you see really are dreadful. Some relations of ours came over from Europe and we took them out for the evening as they wanted to see an English pub. The story they took home was that they saw a woman openly urinating in the street. I don't care what language you speak; that is just disgusting!

Would it be more sensible to offer FREE English lessons to any Ethnic minority people who wish to work / stay in the UK ?
AL44 you need to get out a bit more. What the tourists saw is, I can assure you, just the tip of the iceberg.

William you are right; unfortunately this is the tip of the iceberg, but there is a limit to what I would write about on here. It all boils down to the same thing - a lack of self respect and respect for other people. That is probably the cultural difference that our European visitors would notice most.

I totally agree with William. I would like to see more done in educating them as in some shops in Weymouth don't know what we are talking about. We are getting to be the foreign people in our own country.

If the "migrat workers" want to LIVE here then they should learn Enlgish or stay were they are.

If it is merely to foster trade locally by learning a few basic words for tourists no problem, but if anyone who wants to live here for any duration then they shouldnot come here unless they make the effort to learn English, I would hold myself to the same measure if I was to move or work in another country.

It is tragic you english, after the decline of your precious empire do not see the funny side of being offered the opportunity of learning another language, whilst your ancestors forced your own on other people in other countries.
