Pagans suffer ritual abuse

PAGANS in Dorset claim their growing popularity is making them a target for threats and abuse.

The Dolmen Grove, a Weymouth-based druid group, says a dead bird with a noose around its neck was left on the windscreen of its van.

Then nails were left under the wheels of the van the night after a music gig.

And the group says its 'peaceful religion' is being attacked by people who turn up at stone circle rituals and shout abuse. Chris Walsh, antique dealer and Arch Druid, said the problems started after pagan band The Dolmen played a gig in Weymouth.

"After they played one particular gig in Weymouth someone left a dead bird with a noose around its neck on the windscreen.

"They also typed the words 'Die Witches' on a piece of paper stuck to it.

"It is difficult to say who it was or whether it is organised in any way, but we were very shocked and saddened by it.

"Then someone put nails under the tyres of the van as it was parked in Radipole Lane, the night after they had played another gig.

"At our last ritual at Maumbury Rings a group of people came along to barrack us for no apparent reason.

"Let's face it, there are a lot of misconceptions people have about witches and pagans but we are a peaceful religion who don't want to bother anyone."

Mr Walsh says one reason for the problems may be the higher profile taken by the Dolmen Grove in the past year.

He says that the Dolmen Grove is given permission by the police for each of its services performed at holy sites around the county.

On March 24 the group will perform a 're-balancing' ritual for a 200-year-old tree cut back at Nine Stones in Winterbourne Abbas.

Mr Walsh said: "We have been going for a few years but decided we were getting popular enough to raise our profile a little. A few of the members don't want all the attention, which is understandable, and it might mean that people think we are easy targets.

"But we are a growing religion and the Dolmen Grove itself has 250 members. All we do is celebrate the forces of nature and carry on an ancient tradition, nothing sinister at all."

Well these cowardly, stupid acts couldn't possibly be a response to the music of THE DOLMEN , which is absolutely brilliant and original and one day soon, a wider audience will no doubt realise that fact.

Let's face it, it all stems from the popular misconception that Pagans are all 'devil worshipping, animal sacrificing, naked moon dancers' .... all very colourful, but not very near the truth.

Pete let me put you in the picture we are not a pop group.
Dolmen Grove as a pagan order was established 30 years ago. The Dolmen were formed to provide music at out gatherings only 12 years ago.
Within the Grove there are many Muscicians Authors Artist.

The Dolmen are not the founders of the Dolmen Grove.

Although The dolmen are a pagan band and it is the band That had the dead bird stuck on the windscreen after a gig.
This is only one thing that has happened over the years since we have been together.
We have come across all sorts of nurds and ignorant prats who think that pagans are an easy target for abuse.
Due to our peace loving attitude I guess.
But as we state on another thread we are british we have aright to practise our own British religion, it seems people dont like it and so do and say silly things.

Please ask questions for facts and not presume.
We always are willing to answer sensible questions.

Please dont post off the top of your head without doing any reasearch into your "FACTS" Atchually the group has been going many years before going public. During this time music was played at rituals. From the ritual music the band grew. The Dolmen Grove came before Th Dolmen band. But we are all very proud of The Dolmens success.

Pete, the band are playing near you tonight at Branksome Conservative Club.

Why not go along and find out first hand what you are talking about.

You will be pleasantly surprised I assure you.

The music of THE DOLMEN is as different from 'pop music' as hiphop is from Mahler. It is all original, written by members of the band and quite unlike anything else around on the music scene today.

Judge for yourself.

Another point we should add is that Dolmen Grove is discribed as a Druid group when in fact it is founded by Witches and Druids Pagans Heathens.
And is open to any person who follows the old path.
Welcomes covens and Orders into the Grove and ask only one thing that your path be a foundation based on a love for the higher powers, love and good will to fellow humans and all life on this earth.
If any individual thinks this a wrong thing to ask we suggest they seek help.

Let it also be said that the Dolmen Grove has no leaders it has individuals who donate their time freely to organise things such as the charity events and the magazine called Dolmen Grove.
available from the Dolmen Grove web site or outlets in Weymouth and through out the country.

Dolmen Grove is a non profit organistaion and any course it may offer is given freely.

If any Witch Druid Pagan Heathen wishes to know more there is an online forum of which you are welcome to join, also membership to the Dolmen Grove is free.

Dolmen Grove believe spirituality cannot and should not be bought or sold.

Reinactment with a popgroup,
We are still musing on that one Pete.

The Dolmen, both associated with the grove and the band are some of the most gentle and nicest people I have met in a very long time. They do not deserve such abuse and misconceptions of what they do. This is founded prely on ignorance and prejudice. It serves nothing.

This week coming on the Spring Equinox we will be Going to Stone Henge a British Sacred Pagan Temple we will start a procession at 5 30 am from the bottom gate up through the carpark down through the passage up on to the field 3 times around the Henge and in through the north entrance there is an estimated 200 who will be in this procession and it will consist of a unification of Witches Druids Pagans Heathens and all who wish to join us.
It will be loud with drums and pipes however peaceful and respective and the ritual that will be performed will be Pagan.
Calling for world peace. All so we wish to highlight that Stone Henge is a runner to be voted as one of the new 7 wonders of the world, we encourage everyone to visit the site and get voting because we are dropping further down the line.

It's only 'Halloween' from your perspective Mark, because it fits in with what you WANT to believe about Pagans.

Never mind the truth eh.

As for "playing trick or treat" with us, well these imbeciles are not worth one moments worry as they are cowards who would never face us man to man, as they would be lost, physically, spiritually and cerebrally if they did so.

Ian : The reason for the drums and pipes is to awaken the spirits of the land and to produce energy for the ritual.

And let's face it at 5-30 am, we need all the wake up calls we can get. :)

I can think of many things I could point out about Christianity that are truly hideous and evil, those banging on from the "Christian" perspective might want to bear that in mind?

Whats halloween about the way we dress.
We dress the way we wish like I am sure you do.
Halloweens is a pagan festival by the way have you ever celebrated it.
Are suggesting it is alright to abuse people because of the way they dress.Mark

Drums and pipes does create an atmosphere plus is very pagan.
Humans have done this for thousands of years.

As pagans we do not judge we just go about our merry way and if this offends certain people then tough! I have known the Dolmen a longtime ago when they held their pagan rituals in Dorchester and we are all just a bunch of ordinary people who just dont believe in conventional religions. The sad thing is we do not live in 15th century where persecution was held high for our religion, but we live in a new age era where we are free to believe in what we want without people being silly or harming to others, which is in fact aginst our religion. I wish The Dolmen well and that these sad people do some research and try and be a bit more understanding. blessed be!

I have seen hen-nighters dressed as nuns, but I do not treat then as nuns because I understand the reason for the dress is different. A pagan dresses differently to help define the mundane from the spiritual. Do you ask Sikh men if they’ve hurt their head each time you see them?

I'd like to hear what you know on this matter. I, personally, need no credentials from Chris. He is kind and decent (dispite being an antiques dealer, and constantly persuading people to "say it with a chest of draws"... he has to earn money somehow) he gives his time freely to help others, he does charity work and is recognised and respected by other srch druids. Are there any better credentials than being recognised by your piers? What would be the point in falsely claiming to be an archdruid, which then takes up allot of time and money and earns you nothing? Please give proof and names of who is spreading these rumours.

Ian, your mention of those banging on from the 'Christian' perspective reminded me of something that happened right here in Weymouth a few years ago. It changed my view of the established church forever.

In keeping with family tradition, I wanted my baby son christened. The church refused to christen him, not because they couldn't fit it in, nor for any parish boundary reasons. I was told that no church in Weymouth would christen him, they all being part of the same team.

My son's crime against the church? His parents were not married!

Let's get a few things straight here shall we.

Firstly, The Devil, Lucifer or what ever name you know him by, is purely an invention of the CHRISTIAN CHURCH. It is not recognised in Paganism.

Secondly, music is not inherrantly evil. The music played by THE DOLMEN is definitely not evil. You sound like one of those 1950s religious nutters warning about the evils of Elvis. Ergo, you sound deranged.

Thirdly and very importantly, there are NO LEADERS in The Dolmen Grove.

Since you are so in earnest Christian Mission permit me to correct you. My intention is in no way to 'pursue' these people. My most recent quip was intended (although it may have misfired) to satirise the very notion.
You allude to dangers why don't you speak openly of them?

The poor deluded fool that is Christian Mission doesn't even realise that he is actually breaking the law of this land in his actions here on this forum by persecuting pagans and, as far as dubbing the lead singer of The Dolmen as The Devil goes, well in that case, I for one hereby decree that I give full alleigence to that devil , as a friend whom I would trust with my life, even in the relatively short time I have known him.

Discussion like this also defuses tensions. I might not agree with some people, but respect their rights to hold their opinions, and respect them.

Look at the first post on this thread.
Written from complete ignorance without a care for what the issue is about.

Would you say that was a constructive view point or was it just thrown in to cause a row.
Look at christian mission or common sense man what is their point of view.
Why the insults about the archdruid whats he ever done to these people, oh yes of course he is an Antique dealer.

What happens on forums as such somebody states a view someone else will either agree or disagree another may broaden upon it someone else may slag it.

So far the arch druid has been condemned because he is a antique dealer the Dolmen grove have been classed a reinactment group with a pop group.
all pagans have been called devil worshippers, Oberon you your self have pointed out that you believe we cry persecution just because we dont agree with someones view.

Are we not suposed to say anything back, is this not like the witch trial, drown and you are innocent live and you are guilty.

Being pagan for decades you cant even imagine how many insults we have recieved, and yet seldom made an issue over it.as not to fuel the ego of sicko's by seeing their work in the paper.
Unless these things are happening to you, its not taken serious.

We hope that if you posters and your familys are ever unluky enough to be unjustly victimised or persecuted, you will recieve the same understanding that you give here when trying to state your case.

At the end of the day
we are the sons and daughters of this Country,we pass down through our family line knowledge that will keep our culture and customs alive we follow a belief of which was and still is the foundation of this land.
Whether people like it or not whether people are so far detached from their ancient heritage that they see us as freaks or devils,We will continue to do so,
The Stag horns will march on the festivals as they have
for Thousands of years.

Long live the Horned God and Goddess and our very own pagan Morris dancers, who we pray that each Beltane will awake the Earth Goddess and our summers be beautiful.
at Samhane lets remember our lost family and friends and toast their memory as we begin a new year.

At Yule we will celebrate the Winter solstice and will bring into our homes a Tree, the tradition of the Greenman and the promise of spring.

And by the way
At present We are out asking the people of britain to vote for Stone Henge in the coming election for the new 7 wonders.
I wonder how many of you have voted for one of Britains oldest monuments one of this countrys oldest Temples?
If you have not please do so there will only be the one chance.

I wonder how many of you have voted for one of Britains oldest monuments one of this countrys oldest Temples?

How do you know it was a temple? In my humble opinion it is far more likely to be a solar and lunar observatory - but basically there is no proof either way.

And as far as it being one of the oldest monuments you need to do some research as Avebury (which is far larger) predates Stonehenge by several millennia.

And yes, you are entitles to reply to any comments posted here but to continually cry 'persecution' is very tiresome and does your cause no good. I am sure you have a very valid message to give but try using enlightened persuasion instead of merely trying to shout people down (and yes - using is equivalent to shouting when used within e-media)

And yes we are always at Stone Henge unless we are at another Place.

As you can see from our website it was us that gathered at Stone Henge to bring attention to the New 7 Wonders project, Were you there and if so that means you would know Arch Druid of Stone Henge and Glastonbury Rollo Maufling, we have worked together for over 20 years.
Hence you would have seen him conduct the rite at the henge last spring who do you think was with him??
Perhaps you have got your wires crossed,
We have members and friends who are Druids from cornwall perhaps you would like to share with us the order you are from down there.

Is it the events we organise that you are opposed to?
Cause yes we do advertise publicly to let people know.

As you have read above we did not print this affair with the bird it was picked up off a forum.
It is one of many acts that The dolmen have experienced, and true enough we do keep all poison email just incase things get out of hand.
The police are respectfully informed of all activities and needed information.

Could you please say exactly what it is we are doing that makes you call us charlatans,
As this would at least be a start.

i believe you have confused the word aggressive with exhaustive. this is why i say 'charlatans' for it is you that has given no anwers, just insults!!!
and if you want to play the name-dropping game, i can tell you i have worked wih rollo for 32 years, a lot longer than you (nah)!!
it is you, your group and other media-hungry individuals who do indeed bring the ancient ones into disrepute. any 'balancing' you've 'apparently' performed will just mean more work for those who really care, away from the eye of a camera.

So your problem with us is because we are in the media.
C'mon surely you dont condemn people because they are in the media,
A few faces appeared in an article about an old treasured Tree and suddenly you condemn a whole mass of people as charlatans.
What was wrong in letting the many pagans in this area know that the old beech tree was coming down.
We have had a very positive responce from many people not just pagans who loved that old tree.

By the way Mentioning Rollo is hardly name dropping you had said you never heard of us, and so we mentioned a well known friend who you would know, to establish that we have been around for some time.If as you say you have worked with him for so long phone him he knows us and our work well.

We are very suprised by your mentioning that you will be at the Henge tomorrow because there will be many cameras and media.
Can you tell us where in any Dolmen post you have been insulted?

What are the answers you seek.

we can understand that there are many pagans who wish to stay hidden, but you must accept times are changing and if paganism is to be accepted as equal to other faiths Orders and oraganisations Like the Coranieid, CoA,OBOD,Dolmen Grove,Pagan Federation, etc will push for acceptance, many pagans have been suported in many ways including leagal by these organisations..

Just because you choose not to be apart of these organisations does not mean they are charlatans.
Look at the good these people do the many charities they are involved with.

If you know Rollo you know us and yet you say you have never heard of us?.

When you say group are you referring to The Dolmen as a band.
Because there will always be **** from other bands etc...We hope this is not what your about.

Taloch and members of the band will be at the henge tomorrow like they always are and they will be with Rollo as they have always been.
I think you will find The Dolmen as a band dont need to seek the media attention the way you put it.
And for your info Taloch is a Witch not a Druid.

Who did you say was the order of which you spring Becca.

Becca,

1) You think you've been insulted: YOU called us all (over 200 of us) charlatans.

2) We have a media presence to take the fear of the unknown from the public perception of our practices. Many among our ranks still chose to practice in secret.

3) Do you think bickering amongst the pagan community in public helps anyone? Why not stir things up on our forum at www.thedolmen.com? We like a little challenging now and then. :)

4) Do you have any idea who keeps leaving non biodegradable offerings at nine stones?

5) We've not yet performed our balancing ritual. Why not join us at nine stones and show us how it "should" be done?! We would welcome you.

We saw Rollo today. He was very happy to see us, and had no issues with anything we are doing. Is there any issues you waqnt to bring up Janie?

Why has this emerged again on the echo website, has anyone actually read this through, perhaps Druid groups should take spelling lessons. Key figures include a street busker with an ego you just cant believe, a balding bankrupt fat man, and several rather crazy ladies who think they are witches….come on get real
