A MAN caught on camera may hold vital clues to the identity of a sex attacker who assaulted a 50-year-old Wimborne woman in a supermarket car park.

Detectives investigating the assault in Acland Road, Dorchester, have released CCTV photographs in the hope that they might lead them to the attacker.

Details of the incident, behind the Waitrose store at 5.30pm on Monday, December 18, have just been revealed.

DS Paul Auger of Dorchester CID said: "This is a rare occurrence in Dorchester and I'm appealing for help from the public in finding the man responsible.

"I'm now able to release CCTV images of a man believed to have been in the area at the time of the assault and who may have important information about it.

"I'd like to ask for him and anyone who recognises him to call us as soon as possible as he may have vital information which could help our investigation."

Police have revealed how the victim was opening her car when a man, carrying a Waitrose bag, indecently assaulted her.

He is about 50 years old, with short grey hair and was wearing a grey or blue jumper, jeans and training shoes.

DS Auger added: "I'm keen to hear from anyone who was in the Acland Road car park around the time of this assault and may have witnessed what happened.

"I'd also like to hear from anybody who saw a man matching this description in the Waitrose store in Tudor Arcade on the afternoon of December 18.

"The Wimborne lady was understandably shaken and I'm keen to find the man responsible to reassure her, and the Dorchester community, that this kind of violating behaviour will not be tolerated."

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 01305 222222 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
