Bournemouth's new tourism advert: forget Rob Lowe, we've got Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp in Bournemouth's new tourism ad Harry Redknapp in Bournemouth's new tourism ad

Forget Rob Lowe stripped to the waist in a Californian sea - Bournemouth Tourism has called on the services of Harry Redknapp, Alex James and Debra Stephenson for its new advert in a bid to pull in the crowds.

As well as containing clips featuring local celebrities, the 54-second tongue in cheek adaptation of the Visit California ‘misconception’ TV ad showcases the resort’s less famous residents as well as its award-winning attractions.

Reflecting on his brief role, Harry said: “I was more than happy to be part of the tourism video; it’s no secret that I love the area.

“The beaches and views are fantastic, it’s a lovely place to live. Being filmed on a golf course hitting a football was just a bit of fun; I hope it does well.”

Jasmine Connolly, of the Bournemouth Tourism Marketing Group, told the Daily Mail:

'We were storyboarding some ideas for a social media campaign and remembered that Katy Perry had mentioned when she came to Bournemouth that it reminded her of her home town California.

'It was that which gave us the idea for a parody of the California video.

What you thought:

John Suev, 32, a retail manager from Holland, said: “I don’t recognise anyone; maybe I’ve seen the chef on telly. I haven’t seen the California video so I can’t compare it.”

Anne Hale, 63, who has lived in Bournemouth for ten years, couldn’t name any of the celebrities featured. She said: “I think one has got something to do with football.”

Natalie Bell, 21, an IT student at Bournemouth University, said: “It’s a good way to promote the town, it gives people an idea of the different things you can do in Bournemouth.”

Letting agent Patricia Wyatt from Ringwood said: “Harry Redknapp is the only person I recognise. I’ve always thought the town could promote itself better.”

Building society worker Helen Strutt, 17, from Bournemouth said: “That’s some football guy; I know his face but don’t know his name. But I don’t have a clue about the others.”

Watch it below - and let us know what you think. How many faces can you name?

Harry, tip 1, your grip is too strong, hence hook of ball.
Tip 2, the rules of Golf stipulate that a ball should not be bigger than 1.68 inches.
Tip 3, spend more time working how you can get your QPR misfits to beat the mighty AFCB next season.

I’m just thankful that Harry Rednap didn’t strip to the waist for the advert.

But 2/3 of people liked the video when voting so it underlines what I have thought you get what you deserve in Bournemouth.

I think it's a really good ad, each section leading to the next. I love the end shot in the rain. Harry may live in Poole but has always had an association with bournemouth. Alex still spends plenty of time here, mostly Southbourne and Boscombe. As for Poole v bournemouth? Some years ago the council came up with the 'its a beautiful place' logo. That was very inventive and untrue.

Strip out Sandbanks? Why? Sandbanks is part of Poole. And average house prices in Poole (over £265K) are higher than in Bournemouth (£226K). And far from falling, they've gone up slightly in the past year.

Yes, there are poorer parts of Poole, just like there are poorer parts of Bournemouth (ever heard of Boscombe?). So what?

Land reg shows poole has fallen 1% past year and that is with sandbanks in the equation. These are actual sold prices and not asking prices which have gone up but are wishful in the extreme. Your not reading the dailymail or express are you wouldn't trust their financial experts.

I think the OHEC means that famous impresario (sorry, impressionist) from Hull, Debra Stephenson.
Great trio to promote Bournemouth, i.e. a man from East London who claims he has difficulty reading and writing, never mind completing tax returns, another from East Bournemouth (well, from Boscombe, actually), whose life was not such a Blur that he writes in his book that he spent a million pound on cocaine and champagne and an impression creator from East Yorkshire who is so famous even the Echo can't write her name correctly.
Methinks, the reputation of Bournemouth, such as it is, may have just Gone West!

So the fact that you failed to recognise a number of "famous"/well known personalities is the fault of the producers of this?

Perhaps you should give them a list of people you would recognise for next time?

I'm sure they'd be grateful.

As a former born in Bournemouth resident, who currently lives US and visits SoCAL. I think this shows Bournemouth in a good light to potential visitors. Don't be so picky.
I can assure you Rob Lowe is not the face of the "California Sea " and despite the decline in the Poole /Bournemouth area due to the replacement of wealthy retirees with the other end othe market. I can assure you it is preferable to the equivalent in L.A.

Eeeh Barry, that Bournemouth looks reight grand. Appen we'll go there this year". Can't see it working if the idea is to get people to come for their summer holidays.. I don't mind the advert, in fact quite like it ..but it does seem a little pointless.
