Chaos as A338 closed at Springbourne after accident
6:30am Thursday 13th December 2012 in News
TWO people had a lucky escape after their car was sandwiched in a multi-vehicle smash on the Wessex Way last night.
The collision caused traffic chaos across the area as motorists struggled to find alternative routes to avoid the A338, which was closed at Springbourne roundabout for about an hour.
The driver and passenger of the silver Smart car had to be cut free from the vehicle as a result of the three-car collision, which took place just before the Cooper Dean slip road around 4pm.
Police were forced to close the northbound carriageway at Springbourne roundabout to Cooper Dean as three fire crews worked to free the pair, who were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Their injuries are not believed to be serious although one of the casualties was removed on a spinal board.
Alternative routes quickly became congested with rush hour traffic backed up to County Gates roundabout while Richmond Park Road and Charminster Road were also at a standstill as drivers struggled to avoid the tailbacks.
Ashley Road in Boscombe and Castle Lane were also affected by the incident.
One motorist said: “It's a nightmare. Whatever route you take, it's snarled up, the tailbacks are horrendous.
“Whichever way you go, you're going to get stuck.”
The accident, which took place in lane one, just before the Cooper Dean turn off, closed the road for around an hour as firefighters worked to extract the pair by removing the doors of the car.
One driver, the first in the queue on the Wessex Way, said: “Police told us to turn our engine off and didn't say how long it would be.
“We can see the fire engines and police cars and ambulances in front of us but nothing is moving.
“Fire crews are having to cut out two people and we can see one in an ambulance.
“All the cars are just bunched up together.”
Police opened the road around 5.15pm.
The Smart car and the Toyota were both recovered.

If it is it should be at the Cooper Dean intersection!
Bit late now I know but surely you should check first?

Why does it take so long for a road to re-open after a crash? And why did they have to park a car on the slip road with lights going and two coppers inside doing nothing? I think you could speed up the process up after a crash. The Police need to be a bit more proactive.Get the casaulties sorted, mess cleaned up and road opened as a matter of urgency.

This isn't about 3 cars involved in an accident - accidents happen.
This is about a town whose entire road network ground to a halt after an accident involving 3 cars.
A town whose population grew 13% between 2001 and 2011, yet I doubt the road capacity grew by the same percentage...
We need some answers from the council as to what their strategic plan is for the infrastructure of the conurbation as it's only going to get worse...

Time to ban passengerless vehicles from some lanes and roads at peak times, then they'll be a bit more likely to car-share.

The majority of peak time car drivers could either car share or use public transport but refuse. These people are the traffic problem.
Anyone that doesn't take commuting onto account when moving or changing job is daft.

"Firstly, we don't have accidents we have collisions which are normally caused by errors."
- an accident is defined as 'An unexpected and undesirable event, especially one resulting in damage or harm' - I think yesterday's event matches that description. "Collision" is a legal term.
"so as this thing does not happen every hour of everyday in this sleepy one horse town...grow up and deal with it"
- we live in the South East Dorset Conurbation (SEDC); the 16th largest population in the UK, larger than Southampton and only a slightly smaller population than Edinburgh.
Hardly a one horse town, and one which needs a lot of investment to prevent the traffic chaos which is becoming more frequent. Do you think the whole of Cardiff (which has a smaller population than SEDC) grinds to a halt when there is a 'Road Traffic Collision'?

A lot of accidents are caused by drivers not driving too often and coming out once a week "driving miss daisy", I do in excess of 60k miles a year and I don't hang about, but I drive safe but it is the incompetence that causes accidents not necessarily speed all the time. In all the miles I drive I have never had a fault accident and not had one for 13 years, both accidents I have been involved in are when I have been stationary at a junction........ I see so many near misses due to incompetence but hardly any relating to speed!

On another note, putting a speed camera before a busy exit slip road is daft. Cars slowing down for no reason causes bunching, then you get the cars in the outer lane that want to pull off pulling into gaps that aren't there which causes further braking. All this sooner or later ends with a shut. Yes we should all leave more space but the easiest solution is to move the camera!

They have my greatest admiration.

Why don't you go and look at one and see what I am saying? You obviously want a safe car that isn't as expensive as whatever you are driving - sorry, I forgot, you think I am stuck up - your so nieve, that you wish to pay ALOT more to travel than I do. Good luck with that! :) Caring isn't a strong point for you eh?

It really annoys me when people judge without looking up the facts. You may think your safer in a big estate of truck but actually a Smart car has a 5 star rating on safety in European tests, which, the new one has been proven to protect the chest and head and spine better than your average Ford. Please use google, that is what it is there for!! Notice that the air bag didn't go off? Or the fact that the steel 'roll cage' hasn't given way?! Seriously do some research as the Smart is the safest small car on the road! Coming from someone who has had two. The first was written off due to being so expensive to repair - which this one will be - been there, done that! Same spot even! Hope the smart occupants are recovering well. They were smart enough to buy a proper decent and safe car.
'Ooooh look everyone I've got a Smart car and they are like really, really expensive'.
(especially when you are a crud driver and keep crashing it eh?)

Is this anything to do with the continual failure of the traffic lights there?
One does exagerate.
