Help create public art for Weymouth

A SCULPTURE or other piece of public art is set to adorn the Weymouth Gateway site.

Artists are now being asked for their input.

The piece will be located at the Mercery Road development, which includes a new Sainsbury’s, Whitbread restaurant and hotel, and New Look Support Centre.

New Look is funding the whole project as part of its planning agreement with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council guiding the scheme.

The search is now on for an artist or group of artists with a suitable background to create the scheme of public art.

They would work with the community to create the piece.

For more information, including to download the artist’s brief visit weymouthandportlandpartnership.org

If this "Art" is worth a flying **** and if anyone was even the slightest bit interested in it without it being forced on them why don;t it fund itself with making a profit, you know like anything worth while that people actually need or want.

You know why...because it's crap and nobody really wants it, save for a few "chums" and their left wing civil service cronies.

If the real Cecil B. DeMille knew that you were preaching this sort of prejudiced and ill-informed claptrap under his name (albeit thinly disguised) he would be turning in his grave.

Whatever it is that is motivating you I suggest you either take more water with it or abstain altogether.

My goodness what a bunch of whiners the correspondants here seem to be.
How about finding out what the artwork might be before dismissing it? How about giving some real support and vision to making Weymouth an even greater place to live?

I'm with you. You cannot have enough of this sort of thing as it serves to highlight the rich historical, cultural and artistic aspects of the borough that might otherwise be overlooked by the casual passer-through. It is an ideal opportunity to showcase new talent and to promote pride in our region and positive involvement from the community as a whole.

I agree with Bob & ILW. Great to have art around the area. Wouldn't it be better placed where it could be appreciated by everyone and not just a fleeting glance when waiting in a queue ?

Let's hope it will be more visible than that.

He could be referring to the 'rox on stix' which drivers don't see if they are paying proper attention to the road and other vehicles around them.
Another poorly sited statue is the one on the right as you travel up New Road on Portland (The Spirit of Portland). This can only be approached on foot if you are able-bodied because there are no disabled car parks nearby.

Throckape says...

The Money would be better spent on facilities in the area.

We already have a huge number of statues compared to somewhere like the whole of Poole and Bournemouth...

Dave Aitch says...
9:04am Tue 13 Nov 12

Yes, "rox on stix" is a good example of a lack of forethought by those who should know better. Especially when so much money was frittered away on it. If the idea of art is for people to look at it, then the piece has to be in a prominent position. A good example of this, now, is the Olympic rings at the top of the Isle. Visitors can park up quite close and walk a short distance to admire the view and the Olympic rings. Unlike the "rox on stix" . If the next piece of art ends up on the roundabout outside Morrisons, for example, it would be a waste. Throckape: Excellent point, but as the original article states, "New Look is funding the whole project as part of its planning agreement with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council guiding the scheme." Perhaps in the future, W&PBC could suggest that if companies would like to contribute to the area, they could do so in a more practical and functional way.

PossumGoose says...

Agree, PLEASE no more rox-on-stixs. Maybe we could get that nice Mr Gormley to do us an Angel of the South.
But seeing it’s funded by NewLook it would probably bear a remarkable resemblance to a skinny manikin in a dodgy frock.

Sorry was it "waycsist" towards statues or something? Give me a break you bleeding heart. It is no coincidence that while the more idiots we have running things putting up more and more "public art" at the exact same time this town has been going down the toilet.

Waste of money and time. I stand by what I said, if this nonsense was worth the slightest ****, it could finance itself. Why don't the scroungers, sorry "artists" finance it? I wonder why?

Just thinking how many statues we have..

Rox on Stix aka Fred Flinstones Coconut shy
Kings Statue
Queen Victoria
That Alderman down by the Alexader Gardens.
Spirit of Portland
Gateway to Portland
Olympic Rings (trade mark?)

Do we really need more...

That's only approx. one sculpture per square mile which is nowhere near enough or too many. There must be more that. Have you visited Tout Quarry lately?

Another piece of sculpture would be nice (it is after all an important indigenous art form) but the plan does not preclude other media.

Your funny. I love your comparison between public art and an apparent downward spiral of weymouth. I would have thought that was down to people not having money or wanting to spend it here. Learn something every day.

Back up your claims with proper statistics and proper peoples views or it never happened.

Oh, and by the way, I'll not take issue with the fact that you started a sentence with the word 'And' because this now seems to be common usage (thanks to our friends in the direct marketing industry whom I have to thank for providing me with an income for the last 35+ years).
