BOND KEEN ON POWELL'S EXPERIENCE
ON TRIAL: Chris Powell
ON TRIAL: Chris Powell

FORMER England defender Chris Powell could be the man to add much-needed nous to Cherries' youthful backline.

The vastly-experienced left-back, who was capped five times under Sven-Goran Eriksson, trained with the Dorset club yesterday and could join the League Two outfit after being released by Championship side Charlton Athletic.

Manager Kevin Bond has a shortage of recognised defenders in his squad and that situation could soon worsen after the club's long-serving left-back Warren Cummings had a transfer request accepted last week.

The defenders Bond has at his disposal are short of first-team exposure, with Jason Pearce, Ryan Garry and, as a full-back, Lee Bradbury all still learning their trade.

Despite being keen to build a young squad, Bond revealed the opportunity to take a closer look at a player of Powell's pedigree was too good to pass up, especially given Cherries' likely impending points penalty.

"I know what I said with regards to a preference for younger players and Powelly couldn't be further away from a younger player if he tried," said the Cherries boss.

"But this is definitely a here and now short-term situation if it were to happen. I've got two young boys potentially who are going to be playing centre-half, with potentially a young goalkeeper, so you are undoubtedly going to need some experience around them.

"Whilst Bradders is a very experienced player, he isn't a very experienced defender.

"So from that point of view, I wouldn't be unhappy with somebody who is a talker who can help them.

"I'm fully aware that I may appear to have contradicted what I believe my overall philosophy is, which is to bring younger players in, but this is a short-term situation.

"The other side of it of course is that we're not in any normal season whereby you can maybe have plenty of youngsters around and they can learn as they go through the season.

"We're starting the season behind the eight ball and can't afford to be having any devastatingly bad runs because that will finish us.

"We can ill afford to have too many youngsters finding their feet because we can't afford to lose that many games."

Bond believes Lambeth-born Powell, who will be 39 in September, could offer a lot to Cherries' squad.

He said: "Money is not the issue with Chris Powell.

"What is the issue is to continue playing while he believes he can do himself justice and I know he can do himself justice.

"He's such a good professional, he's a fitness fanatic, he's not a drinker and he's such a good influence that I just thought it was too good an opportunity for us to pass up."

Powell will not play against Bristol City tomorrow, but he could appear at Dorchester on Tuesday night.

Bond, who is also running the rule over young Pompey pair Matt Ritchie and Joel Ward, hinted that trialist goalkeeper Shwan Jalal could move a step closer to earning a contract if he impresses against Bristol City.

Very sensible thinking by KB. You can't beat experience. I wish people would stop going on about Paul Telfer. He was another good professional hit by bad luck with an injury. I've heard he is having a trial at Leeds!

Makes more sense than anything else that appears to be happening. He`s got the T shirt . Lets hope we still have a Club ? Here i go again ! The vitals website is sending alarm bells ringing . AFC Bournemouth Ltd registered with Savi / Baker / Mostyn / Sly as Directors and allegedly fans been asked to make cheques payable to this company ? Hope i am wrong but something appears strange Mr Krasner ?
Answers please ! Also get down to Dean Court fast Executive Boxes on Sale 3 for the price of 2 ? They appear to be desperate to sell them with great reductions ?

Absolutely spot on!! No one could argue what he is saying doesnt make sense! Its all about balance and an experienced defender is vital with are youthful backline!

Whats is the latest on Lovell? That one seems to have gone down the U-Bend.
Also I have to go with the others on Warren. He is not at his best and you cannot live on pace alone. His final pass-and sometimes a shot-have lacked the quality than before his break. However this should get cleared up soon, as it is reported in some circles that the Echo have a story linking him with a £45,000 move to Aberdeen.
The football league saga however is our biggest threat-because it would be so cruel if there was no football here again

With the defence now starting to take shape our strategy, with a minus start points figure, is what do we need to do to stay up?
The answer: WE MUST WIN MORE MATCHES THAN WE LOSE.Don't even think about draws.
If we win 24 games we stay up, even if we lose 22 games.
To achieve this goal we need more goalpower than is currently in the squad.Hopefully, Bond has got a few targets in his little black book who can produce the required.

It's going to be a las tminute deal though. Any half decent strikers are either with a club ( therefore we cannot buy yet) or having trials with clubs who can afford them. I cvant even think of anyone worth signing as a striker yet. well not realistic ones anyway. Up the cherries

Your drivel is now boring and what you say is a load of crap. Again what this gotta do with the boardroom? So just STFU with your pathetic boardroom rants that make no sense. I see you would go so far in business, hmmmmm yeah right. Your probably a lonely boy on your own with no friends so you come on here to rant off about anything when it's nothing about the board but PLAYING....something you don't give a **** about cos like most people who have no life they just moan moan moan and also pretend to be other people *cough* *cough*

yes i do like experience and you all do say about telfer and i have to agree we only seem to focus on old players and not the youth enough if he was that good and experience he would still be at charlton i hope we do sort this defensive problem out because if we have same injuries as last year we will b deducted points for not enough players we cant afford to keep having old player as they are more likely to get injured more have young ones plz kb

Mike, we are now or will be a new company, it makes sense to have cheques payable to a new company, no point making them out to a company that does not exsist

If only people got behind the club and showed support in the managers decisions. If we signed kaka people would moan about the wages!
We are a league two club with a young side, bringing in seasoned professionals will help the young lads develop. And we should be lucky that we can still attract these sort of players.

well considering the lack of information about wednesdays meeting i presume we're still in admin with no golden share. if it had have gone well we would know. what next? hope they have a contingency plan. what is going on?????????????????
Posted by: Richard Mayes on 10:18am Fri 25 Jul 08
I suspect that any new striker(s) coming in will be loan players - does anyone know what positions the two Pompey lads play in. The Warren link with Aberdeen is an old story it is claimed that Aberdeen offered £45,000 and Kilmarnock £20,000 - turned down.Lovell has been linked with three SPA Clubs - but hasn't joined them- possibly waiting for the FA's decision and whether we can offer him a decent package.
Posted by: Chubbs, Bmth on 10:45am Fri 25 Jul 08
If we had an experienced manager and he anniunced the above, everybody would be praising his decision as it seems a good decision, but because Bond is only starting his second full season and has made mistakes before, people jump at the chance to knock him down as they did in previous thread. If those people took the time to look at the facts they would see that it seems a good decision and with the right idea in mind, as the above article proves.

I have emailed Neil Perrett twice asking what is going on at the club regarding the league meeting and Mostyn. Maybe we all should and then we might find something out. Or he might go and do some journalism.

Using the rationale that any player worth playing wouldn't get released would mean that you think all the first team with the exception of Pitman is rubbish

If a cheque is made out to the old company, i assume it goes towards paying Mr. Krasner whereas making it payable to the new company ensures some funds for the start of the season? Is this legal as we are still in administration? Who would get the money, if paid to the new company and they end up withdrawing for any reason?
Posted by: kenno, Sidmouth on 11:40am Fri 25 Jul 08
Has anyone noticed the new media friendly Sean O'driscoll. No mre shrinking violet, hide away behind the dugout Sean.No less than nine teletext entries during the last fortnight linking Doncaster with this player or that.He has obviously read Harry's book.
Come on Kevin link us with a few players even if "we" all know there is no money to buy them. Raise the club profile and give us a song in our hearts. It will make you feel better as well. How about Gareth Barry and Ronaldo for starters.

I would make two observations here.We are very fortunate in having Kevin Bond as our team manager. Who else would want the job in the circustances prevailing??. Secondly there is the well known observation, that you "Cannot buy expereience". Kevin is doing just that.Let's see how it all works out.I would like to see more support for Kevin at this very difficult time.
We are in the hands of the Football League, can't think of a worse situation than that.Ask Luton!!!

My comments are only made so that people that do not read VITALS get the same information as others . AFC BOURNEMOUTH LTD is a new company and if they do not own AFC BOURNEMOUTH there may be a problem with WHO cashes the CHEQUES ?

I believe they should have asked for Cheques to be made out too AFC BOURNEMOUTH IN ADMINISTRATION ? People are only trying to safeguard the Clubs FUTURE . If everything is above board then we are ALL happy so cheer up its Friday yippeeeeeee

every thing appears to be :hopefully:, lets have a more positive attitude and make sure that it is, what I do find dissapointing is that after the good news of the new sponsorship deal the club has not capitalised on this with more news to gain the fans interest, there are many things that could be done start to update the website would be a beginning, we have all heard of the strong team that is in place, well who are they all, I sent an email to the club nearly a week ago and still no reply

I know I am supposed to be one of the more vocals on here but I cant see anything wrong with giving Powell a try If he is no good we can get shot of him This is not a Perrett situation he doesnt come with a History of injurys and an old hand may just steady the defence and give the Kids a chance Bond is paid to pick the Team not us we should let him get on with it .We can complain if it goes wrong but surely not because it might go wrong Far more important things to worry about.

Hey all,
apologies for posting this but i've tried elsewhere and only got a poor response.
i've set up a fantasy footie league for bournemouth supporters.
its http://fantasy.premi
erleague.com and the mini-league ID is 44941-23398. feel free to join. the more the beter! its a good free competition with regular free transfers and tactical decisions required!

I guess Powell would be a good addition for league two. Suppose anyone with more than 20 apps to their name must be looked at! :)
