BIG RUSS: I HAD TO CALL IT A DAY
RETIREMENT: Defender Russ Perrett
RETIREMENT: Defender Russ Perrett

LUCKLESS Russ Perrett reluctantly decided to hang up his boots after his dream move to Dean Court turned into a nightmare.

The 34-year-old defender announced his retirement earlier this week after making just 11 appearances for his hometown club.

Perrett revealed he had realised a long-time ambition when he joined Cherries on a one-year contract last summer and admitted he had "high hopes" for the club.

But after suffering a series of bad injuries, he was then struck down by pleurisy and a strain of pneumonia and was eventually forced to call it a day.

Perrett told the Daily Echo: "It's not a decision I've taken lightly.

"I spoke to a few people who have been in the same position and they told me not to rush into anything. But I'm happy with my decision and now I want to move forward and start something else.

"What's happened over the past few months has made up my mind. It's been soul-destroying not being able to play and train. I just don't want to go through another awful season of picking up injuries and illnesses.

"Initially, it was scary when I fell ill. It hit me straight away and I wasn't quite sure what was happening. It was all down my left side and you immediately panic that something is wrong with one of your major organs.

"I picked up an infection which turned out to be pleurisy. That laid me low for a while and because things didn't really improve, I got it checked out again and was told I had pneumococcal pneumonia.

"It's taken me two to three months to get myself back to normal. Nothing could have prevented it or speeded up the recovery. It's something that can hit anybody at any time and I was just unfortunate that it hit me at the end of the season when I could have done with being fit."

Perrett was one of three players to sustain a long-term injury during Cherries' ill-fated 1-1 draw with Northampton in September.

And after battling back from a torn hamstring, he then suffered calf and knee injuries before illness brought his season - and career - to a premature end.

"When I first arrived, I thought we were going to be in for a good season," added the former Pompey, Cardiff and Luton man. "But the treatment room always seemed to be chocabloc and no squad can cope with that.

"The club wasn't in a position financially to bring in new faces to bolster the squad. It was always going to be an uphill task and that's how it turned out. In the end, the lads were unlucky not to pull themselves out of it but it was a great effort to take it to the final game."

Perrett, who runs a successful soccer school in Lymington, will take stock during the close season before deciding whether he wants to return to the non-league ranks.

The former AFC Lymington defender added: "I've got a couple of months to think things over, although there is a possibility that I will carry on part-time."

Sorry about your illness Russ but it was rather convenient that you decided to wait until your contract was up before announcing your retirement . So you may want to carry on part time nothing new there then been like that for 10 Years but not your fault Bondy knew the risk and took it. Best of Luck anyway

Good luck Russ, its a pity it never worked out, these things happen. With regards to when you decided to hang your boots is not any fans concern, they too would have waited until the season ended, why not. Like i said good luck mate.

Telfer didnt did he a proper profesional who put his Team mates , the Club and the Supporters before his own financial gain So yes it is of concern to the Fans of a Club that nearly went bankrupt .

I agree.
It doesn't add up that he cares about the fans, team and club while spending almost his entire season drawing a wage from the treatment room.

Give the guy a break. He has had a potentially life threatening illness but continued to strive to recover in order to make his dream move work and help his hometown club. Hardly what I would call 'convenient'.

Face facts He was finished long before he got Pluresy which I have had and its not pleasent although it usually only potentially life threatening if you are unfit or old Oh point taken I see what you mean. He came her on a one Year deal Telfer knew when it was time to help the Club out and did the decent thing I could understand you having a go at me if this was something I have just started saying but I have allways said Perrett was a bad signing because of his injurys and us having no money to waste on passengers . He wasnt having his contract renewed anyway If you read back he signed for us because Luton didnt want him due to his injurys and he didnt like driving to Luton from his home So dont believe all this Guff about his dream move Anyway hes gone now so another pointless expense saved. Well done Bond for getting shot of him and Tessem

Its not that he has done anything wrong its just that everybody knew he had a terrible injury record before he came here and the thing that sticks in my throat is that players took pay deferals when we were up against it who were playing week in and week out and Telfer did the honorable thing and cancelled his own contract yet this bloke held on for the last penny. Its noting to do with his Pluresy he was finished at the start of the season he only got that towards the end I think he should have gone quetly instead of trying to make out he allways wanted to play for us. I am sure every Club he has played for has been his dream move. This is one mistake that Bond has clearly learned from so good luck to him

He can have a nice break now just not at this Clubs expense

his injury record suggests we should not have signed him but in fairness to him why should he have walked away. he had a contract and just like everyone else he has bills to pay. telfer did walk away but perhaps he circumstances were different

This guy was KB's biggest clanger. He had an awful injury record at Luton and he ended up getting a years free ride on a club that could'nt afford it.

On shear ability when fit the guy was better than any of the centre halfs we have at the club, a risk worth taking that didn't work out. If he passed a medical when he signed whose to blame. iF he had kept fit could have been one of Bonds better deals hindsight is great but it doesn't make you an expert. Good luck Russ and thanks for trying

I am not saying he has done anything wrong he is entitled to his contract but If ever a Player should have been on a pay if you play deal it was this one and I bet if Bond had offered him that last Year he wouldnt have signed for his hometown Club in his Dream move . This signing more than anything started the questioning about Bonds ability but he has clearly learnt from his mistakes.

Kevvo did you see any of Telfers performances, call him a profesional?????
Never did I resort to boo-boy tactics like some other short sighted supporters, any player who pulls on red n black should be supported 100% BUT.................
.Telfer hardly did himself any favours and should have had the professional integrity like Russ has and held his hands up a lot sooner than he did.
He should never have signed in the first place as he was carrying an injury and had played no football for almost 6 months.
When Perrett signed he was fit and although he had been injury prone in the past, he seemed like a decent signing.
He had a multitude of injuries sustained through the course of the season and didn't sign injured like Telfer, how he passed a medical god only knows.
Give Russ a break Kevvo, if you had been a professional player for over 10 years and had a to make the decision to pack up playing you would want to give it time and consideration and not think oh sh*t I have got three months of my contract left I better pack in now and save the club a bob or two of some fans may think I was just here for the pay cheque.
Put yourself in his shoes and you would do the same.

PAUL TELFER PLAYED IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE AND THE SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE FOR CELTIC. I'M SURE HE HAS AMASSED ENOUGH MONEY OVER THE YEARS TO BE ABLE TO CALL IT QUITS THIS YEAR. RUSS PERRET IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT STORY. ENTERING THE GAME LATE AND HAVING NEVER REACHED THE HEIGHTS OF PAUL TELFER.

ITS THIS SMALL MINDEDNESS & LACK OF VISION THAT REALLY ANNOYS ME ABOUT AFCB FANS. WAKE UP.

I only meant about him giving up his contract quite frankly Telfer was rubbish for us someone on here quite rightly said that Perrett must have passed his medical so was fit when he signed which is a fair point but on the same note Telfer who openly admits he was carrying an old injury got through the same medical process so that in itself is rather worrying To be honest I never rated either of them and I am glad they have gone. After what some Luton fans told me I am surprised we got 11 games out of Russ And I dont in fairness know what I would do if I was a Footballer although my Dad was and I remember him saying thats it I cant do it anymore when he left an East Anglia Club but they didnt get paid so much then.

Anyway they are only my opinions of RP and no stir up was intended To be honest it detracted from the real issues as to what Jeff Mostyn is doing to get the investment to buy the Club which is proberbly why the Echo printed the nearly pointless article in the first place

You didn't stir anything up,you have your opinion other people have a different one. We have to talk about something now the season is over and that long wait until the first Saturday in August seems so far away!!!!
Yeah the echo wouldn't want any positive talk or at lest Neil Perrett wouldn't, I expect he will crawl back under his stone if we do well next year, if we struggle he will be shouting from the richmond hill rooftops at ohec HQ.

...FFS there are some heartless ones posting on here...I'm sure that Russ really wanted to perform for AFCB and Kevin knew that if he did then he would of picked up a decent professional footballer...it's not fair to slag off a player when he has had to go through what he has..there are things MORE important than football..and certainly more important than small minded 'fans' having a pop at a person for suffering ill health...I hope kevvo that when you get an illness your employer gives you better sympathy and support..it really doesn't matter anyway we have been relegated due to many poorer decisions throughout the season that relates to many players and the manager's strategies...but he is learning and may just become a better judge of players in the future...after all Telfer & Perrett never made it for him...whereas Hollands and Vokes have!

Time to get off his back isn't it, the bloke has nearly died for god's sake, surely you can't stick the knife in after all he's been through, as for him playing so few games, he loves the club he wanted to give his all and he had a season from hell, also to expect him to give up his contract whilst he was out injured is unfair, Telfer knew that he would not come back and Russ was desperate to play, they are nothing like each other in that respect, so please time to wish him good luck in the future and it was a shame he couldn't give us what he wanted but sometimes in life things just don't work out.

They will all be hanging up their boots at the next and hopefully final Receivership, then the land can be used for something really uselful. I'm sure our good mate Wells could come up with a nice little estate!

What relevance does your post have to Russ retiring from football, it's a nonsense post just put on here to wind people up, what a poor effort.

Your so boring Steve. Heard it all before from your like. Come up with a concrete comment based on fact.

Perett was a poor signing due to his record of only 100 odd games in last 7 odd years but he took the opportunity so can't blame him for that. Good luck to him for future though.

Big Rich, I'm surprised that you know what type I am,GMcMahon, Anyway the point that I was trying to make is that we have a 'CRAP' team and have done for many years now, so why don't you face the facts and move on to something worth talking about.

Still no sense from you, on what you are saying then anyone with a team that doesn't win every week should give it up, try telling that to thousands of fans up and down the country and I hardly think the best record in the country in April makes us a crap team, if you support the cherries you have a funny way of showing it.

Bowman is a wind up merchant, and nasty with it,wait for the threats to come,as said already whats it to do with perett.

I guess I agree with those who say get off Perrett's back on this thread. The fault lies with the person who signed him with a clearly awful history of injuries. Come Milan give us a nice hefty fee for taking our manager!
