WEYMOUTH firefighters were called to Marlboro fish and chip shop - not to put out a fire but to enjoy a thank-you meal from the owners.
Vincent Johnson, the co-owner of Marlboro, St Thomas Street, Weymouth, was finally able to reopen the shop after a four month closure following a kitchen fire that blazed through his shop causing more than £300,000 worth of damage.
To reward Weymouth's Red Watch fire crew for working tirelessly to put out the blaze the owner treated them to a free lunch and donated £500 towards the Fire Services' National Benevolent Fund.
He said: "We came down here when the fire was blazing and we saw what great work the fire fighters were doing.
"Apart from being emotional it was really frightening for us to watch. I couldn't thank the crew enough for how good they
were."
Dave Meyers, Red Watch's manager, sat with the other seven firefighters in his watch as they ate their courtesy lunch while their driver sat in the fire truck outside in case of an emergency call.
He said: "Obviously part of our job is that we only go in when there is an emergency in this case a fire so it's really nice for us to see the business has reopened.
"Last time we saw it it was a real mess. It was totally gutted black and full of smoke.
"The place has bounced back and that is a real success story."
