One in four diners will only visit a restaurant if it offers a discount, research has revealed.
The credit crunch has led to fewer people eating out which has forced restaurants to offer deals to entice diners to their tables.
Many have now turned to offering money off vouchers to make eating in a restaurant an affordable luxury.
Research from moneysupermarket.com Vouchers revealed 26% of diners would chose a restaurant offering vouchers ahead of an establishment offering no discount.
The research also found that high earners such as bankers and lawyers have reduced the number of long lunches they take by as much as 70%.
And some 40% of Britons are now using a restaurant voucher at least once a month.
The top five most popular restaurant vouchers on moneysupermarket.com are: Pizza Express, Zizzi, Strada, Haha Bar and Grill, and Bella Italia.
Simon James, moneysupermarket.com's voucher expert, said: "Restaurant discount vouchers have become increasing popular over the last 12 months or so as the nation's appetite for value has increased.
"Brits have cottoned on the fact that you don't have to pay over the odds to get good grub and in many cases, you can get it for half price."
