Rowing club joy over new boathouse cash
AS Christchurch Rowing Club prepares to celebrate its 60th Anniversary this summer members have been given an early present of nearly £60,000 towards replacing their crowded boathouse.
Sport England and the Amateur Rowing Association gave £59,400 to the Club as part of a Community Club Programme, which aims to develop links between the country's leading junior rowing clubs and their local communities to produce some sporting stars of the future.
By providing quality resources and coaching and a safe environment for youngsters to train, the programme also aims to offer rowing to a wider range of people in and around the town.
Club chairman Peter Staddon said: "As chairman of Christchurch Rowing Club I am extremely pleased to accept this grant award on behalf of our members.
"In particular the club will be able to develop its links to the local schools which will enable local pupils to move from their current dry start programmes into a wet start programme with the club."
The money means the club can dismantle the existing temporary single storey boathouse and replace it with an enlarged single storey clear span building.
This will provide extra racking facilities and an area that can be used for indoor training.
David Reader, development manager of Sport England, said: "I am delighted the club has been successful in applying for funding. They are committed to the development of the sport and the next few years should be an exciting time.
"The Community Club Development Programme is an innovative way of helping to ensure that community clubs - the heart of grass roots sports development in the country - receive the capital investment they need."
He added: "This is central to achieving our vision of England becoming the most active and successful sporting nation in the world."
The money is the icing on the cake for organisers who plan to officially open the completed extension in mid-July in a double celebration for their milestone anniversary.
