A 48-year-old man found stabbed in Boscombe has been named by police.

Gerald Daniel Madine's body was discovered in a ground-floor flat in Westby Road on Tuesday night.

A post-mortem examination showed Mr Madine had died from a single stab wound to his abdomen.

A 43-year-old local woman, who was quizzed by detectives, has been released without charge. A 24-year-old man and 17-year-old woman, who live locally, are still helping police with their inquiries.

The East Dorset district coroner has been informed and an inquest will be opened and adjourned.

Late yesterday afternoon, the rambling Victorian property was still cordoned off and being guarded by police officers while scenes of crime experts completed their investigations.

The Hawkwood Road car park, which backs on to the rear of the flats, was also closed off for a while so that officers could carry out a thorough search.

The block is owned by Dave Wells Properties and contains nine rented flats.

One of the tenants said the couple involved in the incident had lived at the address for three or four years.

He said most of his neighbours seemed to be working people, but added: "There have been scuffles and shouting since I've been here. You do get some colourful characters in this area."

Westby Road is a mix of older properties converted into flats and bedsits; care homes, sheltered accommodation, small hotels and guest houses, and a couple of newly-built blocks of flats.

A member of staff at the Clifton House residential care home opposite the flat said: "We didn't hear anything about it until the second ambulance arrived.

"I only found out what happened when it was on the news. A police officer came round house to house, but didn't give any information." Another neighbour said: "I was inside and heard absolutely nothing."

Steve Wells of Dave Wells Properties said: "This is a real tragedy and our sympathies go out to those involved."

Officers have not recovered a weapon.
