Pagans suffer ritual abuse
 |
| TARGET OF ABUSE: The Dolmen Grove druid group |
PAGANS in Dorset claim their growing popularity is making them a target for threats and abuse.
The Dolmen Grove, a Weymouth-based druid group, says a dead bird with a noose around its neck was left on the windscreen of its van.
Then nails were left under the wheels of the van the night after a music gig.
And the group says its 'peaceful religion' is being attacked by people who turn up at stone circle rituals and shout abuse. Chris Walsh, antique dealer and Arch Druid, said the problems started after pagan band The Dolmen played a gig in Weymouth.
"After they played one particular gig in Weymouth someone left a dead bird with a noose around its neck on the windscreen.
"They also typed the words 'Die Witches' on a piece of paper stuck to it.
"It is difficult to say who it was or whether it is organised in any way, but we were very shocked and saddened by it.
"Then someone put nails under the tyres of the van as it was parked in Radipole Lane, the night after they had played another gig.
"At our last ritual at Maumbury Rings a group of people came along to barrack us for no apparent reason.
"Let's face it, there are a lot of misconceptions people have about witches and pagans but we are a peaceful religion who don't want to bother anyone."
Mr Walsh says one reason for the problems may be the higher profile taken by the Dolmen Grove in the past year.
He says that the Dolmen Grove is given permission by the police for each of its services performed at holy sites around the county.
On March 24 the group will perform a
're-balancing' ritual for a 200-year-old tree cut back at Nine Stones in Winterbourne Abbas.
Mr Walsh said: "We have been going for a few years but decided we were getting popular enough to raise our profile a little. A few of the members don't want all the attention, which is understandable, and it might mean that people think we are easy targets.
"But we are a growing religion and the Dolmen Grove itself has 250 members. All we do is celebrate the forces of nature and carry on an ancient tradition, nothing sinister at all."

A historical reenactment society with a pop group in other words. Hardly the ancient religion claimed on the other comments board.

Well these cowardly, stupid acts couldn't possibly be a response to the music of [bold]THE DOLMEN[/bold] , which is absolutely brilliant and original and one day soon, a wider audience will no doubt realise that fact.
Let's face it, it all stems from the popular misconception that Pagans are all 'devil worshipping, animal sacrificing, naked moon dancers' .... all very colourful, but not very near the truth.

Pete let me put you in the picture we are not a pop group.
Dolmen Grove as a pagan order was established 30 years ago. The Dolmen were formed to provide music at out gatherings only 12 years ago.
Within the Grove there are many Muscicians Authors Artist.
The Dolmen are not the founders of the Dolmen Grove.
Although The dolmen are a pagan band and it is the band That had the dead bird stuck on the windscreen after a gig.
This is only one thing that has happened over the years since we have been together.
We have come across all sorts of nurds and ignorant prats who think that pagans are an easy target for abuse.
Due to our peace loving attitude I guess.
But as we state on another thread we are british we have aright to practise our own British religion, it seems people dont like it and so do and say silly things.
Please ask questions for facts and not presume.
We always are willing to answer sensible questions.

Pete, the band are playing near you tonight at Branksome Conservative Club.
Why not go along and find out first hand what you are talking about.
You will be pleasantly surprised I assure you.
The music of THE DOLMEN is as different from 'pop music' as hiphop is from Mahler. It is all original, written by members of the band and quite unlike anything else around on the music scene today.
Judge for yourself.

Another point we should add is that Dolmen Grove is discribed as a Druid group when in fact it is founded by Witches and Druids Pagans Heathens.
And is open to any person who follows the old path.
Welcomes covens and Orders into the Grove and ask only one thing that your path be a foundation based on a love for the higher powers, love and good will to fellow humans and all life on this earth.
If any individual thinks this a wrong thing to ask we suggest they seek help.
Let it also be said that the Dolmen Grove has no leaders it has individuals who donate their time freely to organise things such as the charity events and the magazine called Dolmen Grove.
available from the Dolmen Grove web site or outlets in Weymouth and through out the country.
Dolmen Grove is a non profit organistaion and any course it may offer is given freely.
If any Witch Druid Pagan Heathen wishes to know more there is an online forum of which you are welcome to join, also membership to the Dolmen Grove is free.
Dolmen Grove believe spirituality cannot and should not be bought or sold.
Reinactment with a popgroup,
We are still musing on that one Pete.

The Dolmen, both associated with the grove and the band are some of the most gentle and nicest people I have met in a very long time. They do not deserve such abuse and misconceptions of what they do. This is founded prely on ignorance and prejudice. It serves nothing.

What confounds me is why do people think they can abuse Pagans, if this was another religious group I could mention people would leave it well alone.

It will be loud with drums and pipes however peaceful and respective and the ritual that will be performed will be Pagan.
Calling for world peace. All so we wish to highlight that Stone Henge is a runner to be voted as one of the new 7 wonders of the world, we encourage everyone to visit the site and get voting because we are dropping further down the line.[/bold]

Perhaps it is because you all dress up like it is Hallowe'en that people want to play trick or treat with you.

What is the significance of the playing of loud drums and pipes? Is thier a ritual reason or is it purely for entertaining reasons.

It's only 'Halloween' from your perspective Mark, because it fits in with what you WANT to believe about Pagans.
Never mind the truth eh.
As for "playing trick or treat" with us, well these imbeciles are not worth one moments worry as they are cowards who would never face us man to man, as they would be lost, physically, spiritually and cerebrally if they did so.
Ian : The reason for the drums and pipes is to awaken the spirits of the land and to produce energy for the ritual.
And let's face it at 5-30 am, we need all the wake up calls we can get. :)

Cheers Midnighter, sounds like fun. Not into it myself as I have my own beliefs but it is a shame some won't at least go and see one of your gatherings before having a go at you all.
I can think of many things I could point out about Christianity that are truly hideous and evil, those banging on from the "Christian" perspective might want to bear that in mind?

We dress the way we wish like I am sure you do.
Halloweens is a pagan festival by the way have you ever celebrated it.
Are suggesting it is alright to abuse people because of the way they dress.Mark
Drums and pipes does create an atmosphere plus is very pagan.
Humans have done this for thousands of years.[/bold]

It is so sad that people will hurl abuse to people whom they do not know, or understand.
The people I have met within both The Dolmen and The Dolmen Grove are some of the best nicest, sincerest and truly amazing people I have met. I cannot wait for the day when everyone is simply accepted for who they are.

As pagans we do not judge we just go about our merry way and if this offends certain people then tough! I have known the Dolmen a longtime ago when they held their pagan rituals in Dorchester and we are all just a bunch of ordinary people who just dont believe in conventional religions. The sad thing is we do not live in 15th century where persecution was held high for our religion, but we live in a new age era where we are free to believe in what we want without people being silly or harming to others, which is in fact aginst our religion. I wish The Dolmen well and that these sad people do some research and try and be a bit more understanding. blessed be!

[bold]bold[/bold] Merry Meet!
I just found this news article at The Witches' Voice. I am sorry to here about your plight. Discrmination should never be tolerated. Especially, when harm is done through such actions as have been mentioned in the article.
Our organization (Church of the Sacred Moon)has suffered from discrimination as well. Fortunately it hasn't gotten as bad as what you are all going through.
We will support you in any way we can. I will post this article on our website and on MySpace to let everyone know what is happening.
Oh, and by the way... I love the music. It sounds wonderful. Don't let anyone tell you different. Blessed Be!

Thank you for your support Jasper. It is heartening to see how pagans from all over the world come together when a brother and sister are threatened by the uncouth and unknowing.
The band are gigging tonight, but I am sure they will be in touch soon.

Ian, your mention of those banging on from the 'Christian' perspective reminded me of something that happened right here in Weymouth a few years ago. It changed my view of the established church forever.
In keeping with family tradition, I wanted my baby son christened. The church refused to christen him, not because they couldn't fit it in, nor for any parish boundary reasons. I was told that no church in Weymouth would christen him, they all being part of the same team.
My son's crime against the church? His parents were not married!
Naming Ceremonies are far nicer ;)

Wykewitch has other talents that are far more important than mere internet etiquette. All this is, is a means of communication afterall. And a rather average one at that.

You were welcomed on to the Dolmen forum and treated with respect yet here you are a gain, why dont you put your web link in now so every one can see what it is you are into.

The Devil lurks in Dorset.
Who has ever met an honest antiques dealer?
The Devil is doing his work dont let him enter your life through costume, title or horns beware of him he is dangerous.
The Truth always herts.
our work needs to move to Dorset.

Funny enough I remember a similar article published in a local mag some years ago that warned people of the devil roaming the purbeck hills in the guise of a folk musician.(This was aimed at The Dolmen amazingly we were black listed due to our belief)
Your terminology reminds me greatly of that article, is it you again?
surely you are not still playing Witchfinder General.

we understand that people love agood debate, but this all has a few serious points that does deserve discussion on a basis where perhaps bridges can be built.

And then you hear mainstream religions making claims like this. Really makes one wonder if they have forgotten, in the centuries since they were honestly persecuted for their beliefs, what true discrimination really is.

Well 'Christian Mission' it seems you've totally missed your path to enlightment. Wandering around in the dark and bashing your head against brick walls often leads to such confusion and disorientation.
Believe what you will, but please allow others their own beliefs without persecution, or don't call yourself a Christian.

I warn of the devil because i and others like me know of the dangers, i realise many of you have no idea of what i speak but if you did you would understand my actions.
The musical beast stirs once more, it is true we have clashed before many years ago and it saddens me that i need to return again.
I will say it is not my way to kill a bird or put nails in tyres i deal straight with the devil but i can see that some might vent there anger in this way but i cannot agree with it.
Pangurban i can help you can return your leaders grip on you can be broken

Firstly, The Devil, Lucifer or what ever name you know him by, is purely an invention of the CHRISTIAN CHURCH. It is not recognised in Paganism.
Secondly, music is not inherrantly evil. The music played by THE DOLMEN is definitely not evil. You sound like one of those 1950s religious nutters warning about the evils of Elvis. Ergo, you sound deranged.
Thirdly and very importantly, there are NO LEADERS in The Dolmen Grove.
This crusade against the devil is an invention of your own diseased mind.
I hope that one day you seek and find a cure for your malady.

MHS :
Whilst we obviously recognise the humour in your posts and, believe it or not, enjoy it to a degree, it has to be asked, would you be prepared to go on to a muslim board and make jokes about innocent dead Iraqi civilians or a Christian board and make jokes about their executed martyrs ?
The poor deluded fool that is Christian Mission doesn't even realise that he is actually breaking the law of this land in his actions here on this forum by persecuting pagans and, as far as dubbing the lead singer of The Dolmen as The Devil goes, well in that case, I for one hereby decree that I give full alleigence to that [italic]devil[/italic] , as a friend whom I would trust with my life, even in the relatively short time I have known him.
In fact Christian Mission, I would be prepared to meet with you so that you could try to turn me away from him on a one to one basis.
How far does your faith take you ?

As a well balanced Christian myself, I'd like to thank Pagans for their tolerance and understanding in allowing Christianity to be accepted in England. The abuse that you are receiving is unacceptable by anyone's standards. Phew, at least no one could behave like that in the name of Christianity, eh?! All the best x

I say again Christian Mission, agree to meet with me to talk this over. You can bring as much 'back up' as you wish, I shall be alone.
Let's discuss this man to man.
Yes ??

[quote]Whilst we obviously recognise the humour in your posts and, believe it or not, enjoy it to a degree, it has to be asked, would you be prepared to go on to a muslim board and make jokes about innocent dead Iraqi civilians or a Christian board and make jokes about their executed martyrs ?[/quote]
Midnighter, Glad you’ve enjoyed some of my remarks, although its obvious that you’re not entirely comfortable with it. This is an open non-denominational comments board where I have in fact largely joked about the reception you receive rather than having made jokes about you. Visiting a denominational notice , board be it Pagan, Christian etc to direct jokes at the membership is not something I'd countenance.

As people have already said on here , We dont even believe in a devil, I am a member of the Dolmen Grove and i stand by my friends on there, who are all intelligent, talented, careing people ,
It would be good if you christian fanatics would behave in the same way! and get your facts straight before trying to cause trouble, if you only realised how ridiculous you sound to ordinary intelligent people out there ,

Although I was upset about the message board, I think that it was because of the dead bird incident. Comments on here are interesting, sometimes witty, and although we don't always agree, aren't we lucky to be allowed to speak freely, without fear of being thrown into jail. Discussion like this also defuses tensions. I might not agree with some people, but respect their rights to hold their opinions, and respect them.
The people who go around hanging birds from vans aren't the sorts that would take the time to post their thoughts on here, as I think they're thoughtless.

Seems it’s all gone a bit quiet on here. Your 15 minutes of fame are nearly up. Looks like you need to set up another straw man like ‘Christian Mission’ if you’re going to sustain this publicity stunt. How about ‘Ordinary Bloke’ ?
Oops now I’ve let the cat out of the bag. The Echo Editor is going to be kicking himself for letting this one through.

I quite liked Matthew Hopkins Societies comments. I think he has a twisted sence of humour which I can appreciate!
Christian mission is extreme. I find it funny that when other Christians tell him he goes too far he makes a put down about himself worships more than just on Sundays! :D SO Christians who do not wish to label other religions as devil worshipers as Christian Mission does are just not Christian enough! :D LOL He is funny isn’t he?

The Dolmen Grove are who they say they are and are NOT as you suggest 'Christian Mission' or 'Ordinary bloke' looking for publicity. I know them and can assure you that they are genuine and normal people, without stooping to pretending to be anyone else. (Forgive me if I'm wrong in what you're suggesting) They're just genuine and ready to answer anything that you ask them in person.

Dove, I salute you - you seem to be one of the few people that have commented here that realise that we have freedom of speech in this country and whether we agree with what has been said we MUST have that right to be able to say what we feel.
I am neither for or against any religion but I do feel that those 'Pagans' that have commented here are not able to see things from any point of view other than their own. (but that also goes for 'Christian Mission' who seems to be the least christian of all people that have commented here).
And I have to say that Midnighter - you are one of the most pompous and naïve people I have ever come across. it is time you got of your high horse and respect other people as well!

'Christian Mission' must have run out of Viagra - he doesn't seem to have been able to keep it up!
Common Sense Man - life is a stage and each must play their part, so which part is yours in what you term a 'pantomime'?

Mark, the net, Midnighter is not like that. Perhaps a good look in the mirror might serve you well and maybe you will find what you're looking for there :)

Many thanks Mark for your kind comments. It is hard to give people the freedom that our families fought for them to have.I respect ALL who have posted to this board, even if I haven't agreed with them. I will say with experience that Midnighter, I have met in person. When we post on the net, we don't see the expression on the person's face. I've said some pretty mad things to Midnighter, who doesn't know me well and he's taken it as fun and been great fun back. I really do want the christian Mission to take up his bid to meet him, as he really isn't a hostile person. I really think that you'd find him a person of conviction, but also he's intelligent enough to have a really good sense of humour, from what I know of the Dolmen and The dreaded beast from **** (as he's been called)and even The Arch Druid, are in the very short time that I've known them, the kindest people that you could hope to meet, they'd give you the shirt on their back to help you.
Sorry to preach, I really do still respect and enjoy everyone one here.
I like Mark most though, as he's been the nicest, so there!

[quote]the devil roaming the purbeck hills in the guise of a folk musician[/quote]
No offence meant with this but why would the devil be masquerading as a folk musician in Dorset? I love Dorset and folk musicians they are great but not really that central to humanity....

Just as long as you don't expect me to lose too much sleep over it.
Have a nice day at the council offices tomorrow won't you, but try not to spend too much time bickering with folk on here when you should be working, there's a good boy. ;-)
