CLASSIC political drama is getting a modern-day makeover thanks to Dorchester Drama.

The theatre company is performing Julius Caesar at Dorchester’s Roman Town House and they are staging it in modern dress.

The production is directed by Stephen Twinn, with Peter Wheeler taking the title role.

Peter said: “Stephen had the vision because he had seen the script and thought Julius Caesar could be the story of the recent government shenanigans in this country. It is all about spin and how people and things are portrayed.

“It is all about telling the public what they want to hear rather than the truth.”

Julius Caesar is Shakespeare’s take on the events leading up to the death of the great military leader and repercussions that followed.

Stephen Twinn feels that its subject matter makes it timeless, so he plans to have his senators wearing smart suits.

Peter added: “Stephen felt that Julius Caesar mirrored the politics of Britain over the past 20 years. And we have brought in female cast member Lee Stroud to play the part of Brutus because of course Margaret Thatcher was one of the most influential politicians of the time.”

The Roman Town House in Colliton Park is the ideal venue – it was unearthed in the 1930s and dates back to the fourth century AD.

Julius Caesar is at Dorchester’s Roman Town House from Thursday to Saturday, July 1 to 3 with performances at 7.30pm. Doors open at 7pm.

Tickets are £8 in advance from Words Etc, Cornhill, South Street, Dorchester or by calling 01305 772187 and £9 on the door.
